“When I lived in China I noticed that a lot of guys had extra long pinkie nails. I have always contended, and my (Chinese) wife has never denied, that that extra long pinkie nail is for nose-picking purposes.

I taught English at a college there, and nose picking with the index finger was rampant among my students, right in the middle of class. It was quite disconcerting the first couple of times I looked at the students and saw one or two of them with a finger buried in their nose up to the first knuckle.

Since it was a lower level college, most of the students were peasants, though. I believe the long pinkie nail is used by the upper- and city- classes and the index finger by the lower- and country- classes.”
