“after doing a quickrestore on my pc, my cd-rom/burner will not work. says "drive not ready". but when i take it in to best buy, it works. what gives?” 8:54:51 PM 6/21/03 “not hte best at this, but I'll give it a shot. Sometmes after doing a restore, or add or deleting any files, it's always a good idea to do a "full boot", which is shut it down and start it back up again. Sometimes things just don't "take" when you just do a restart. Does it work now or is it only working under the influance of the Best Buy people?” 9:02:26 PM 6/21/03 “ive tried that. and yes, only at best buy.” 9:06:48 PM 6/21/03 “Last time I saw that symptom a root virus was involved, didnt show up on any of his scanners but when I pulled a copy of his boot sector it clearly had been altered... reboot,reload,replace....” 9:36:27 PM 6/21/03 “Is your CD writer looking at the correct burner. I have two cd rom's and you could be choosing the wrong drive. Just a simple thought.” 12:20:26 PM 6/23/03 “When you first load the OS, the install process assigns memory register address ranges to certain processes, as well as hardware resources and their associated addresses. From there, each time you install software, certain addresses and option settings are updated in the Windows Registry. Then each time Windows boots up, it also initializes certain values and assigns others dynamic information, such as drive address specifically. Odds are that in the process of loading/installing the ghosted image of your drive, the sequence was altered subtly, such that certain addresses were assigned in a more random process, leaving them unavailable for a static assignment later on in the process. Best and easiest fix is probably going to be to simply unload and uninstall the CD writing software, then the Drive itself, then re-install the drive (windows should detect it on reboot, pay close attention to the options) and then re-install the CD writer software. If you are looking to obtain a clean ghost image, then you need to alter the sequence of the initial install for the base image.” 7:05:52 PM 6/23/03 “wow i could feel my eyes glaze over. thats not a slight against you jeffers, thats a slight against me being so computer illiterate. i more or less understood what you said, ill look at it in more detail when im not braindead from work. right now i just want to be entertained. thank you very much. : )” 8:27:25 PM 6/23/03 “I'm not computer literate. When I asked a question here earlier I followed jeffers advice and it worked well.” 12:09:06 AM 6/24/03 “Fortunately Windows is user friendly..... :D” 3:36:30 AM 6/24/03 “Starting earlier this afternoon, whenever I open a new Works document, there is a small line under my cursor. Small being about 1/4 an inch. Can't get rid of it.” 2:04:07 AM 7/01/03 “Restart you computer. See if it's still there. Try this as Step No. 1. (WORKS, not WORD?? Wow, musta been a cheap-o computer package! heheee)” 5:18:41 AM 7/01/03 “You might be right, I don't know, the computer was a gift. It's the XP Professional OS if that means anything.” 11:53:52 AM 7/01/03 “XP Pro with Works? Sort of like a Maserati engine on a go-cart.” 12:50:23 PM 7/01/03 “lol....” 12:50:56 PM 7/01/03 “I assume it's works. It's the desktop icon with a W” 1:04:34 PM 7/01/03 “ok I took the 1.3 seconds of time it takes to look, and it's word.” 1:06:05 PM 7/01/03
