Has absolutely nothing to do with bp'ing but too bad..

I am sick today - feeling like a dirty, wrung out dish rag - exhausted. And my stomach is sick - wish I could throw up because it might feel better afterwards.

At least it's sunny today. Maybe I'll take my self-pitying mass up to the park and writh in sickness up there? LOL!

I had something last week. Aching back, then aching back with aching knees, then aching back with aching knees with aching ankles, then aching back with aching knees, ankles, feet, hips, neck, headache and was completely sapped of strength. Oh, had a headache, too. Had the symptoms from Sunday to Saturday. My wrists are alittle achy today, but I think that is from foosball.

My husband got sick last weekend. First we thought he had food poisoning and poison ivy. Turns out he has shingles. Boy is this one nasty virus. Totally yucky. Has anyone else out there had this chicken pox related virus?

I had shingles once- That really sucks. They put me on codeine and low grade steroids, which really screwed me up even more.

Shingles is caused by the Varicella Zoster virus (VZV). The same virus that causes chicken pox. I have some info on it from a patient's guide when I was in the hospital. I was lucky enough not to get it, but I heard of others that did. VZV infections manifests themselves in one of two ways. The first involves itching, blistering of skin at the site of the rash extending along one of the body's nerve branches. The nerve endings become infected under the skin and cause great pain.
The second involves the opthalmic nerve to the eye. A rash may occur along the pathway on the forehead and eyelids and if not treated promptly, may damage the eye.
VZV infections are usually treated with intravenous acyclovir over a seven day period. They are quite contagious and according to this book a hospital stay might be required. Morphine and codeine can help with the pain. The itching and pain can continue long after all clinical signs of the infection disappear. Hope this helps some.

Wow, no, they don't have him in the hospital, on intravenous, and we were not told that it was highly contagious. We read up on it on the internet, but there wasn't much. Supposedly people can get chicken pox from the fluid weeping from blisters but not shingles. We all can get shingles if we have had chicken pox as kids. It apparently stays under control until stress or an immune system weakening causes the virus to gain some control. He has had no itching, but lots of pain and muscle aches. He is on acyclovar pills and zovirax cream. Also he is taking tylenol with codeine left over from a previous surgery, just so he can sleep at night. His doctor didn't prescribe any painkillers. I just had a argument at the pharmacy because the insurance company won't pay to refill the cream. Apparently the little tube was supposed to last 8 days, but we used it up in 4. But my husband has an extensive band of blisters above the waist, from front to back. I read that the cream is also used for herpes so maybe the insurance company guidelines need to be different depending on the illness. We have to call the insurance now and fight with them. The pharmacy said that the cream is $120 without insurance. The doctor said that she couldn't help us, that we should just switch to calamine lotion. We were doing that when we thought it was poison ivy, and it got worse pretty quick. Does the zovirax cream aide in healing, or is it just for drying the blisters up? I'm not feeling very happy with the doctor right now, but doctors in NJ are being put out of business by insurance these days so it is hard to get 10 minutes of their time. I figured out that the hairdresser makes half the money per hour than the insurance companies are willing to pay the doctors. That doesn't seem right.

This thing is a mystery to me. What I read said that people over 50 are more likely to get it, and yet most of the people I've known to get it were young adults. Here Chili's son had it, and he is a child. Weird.

Lyndy, hopefully your husband starts to feel better soon. I did some more reading about VZV infections and from what I understood it is contagious to someone that hasn't had chicken pox or been vaccinated. It said you can't catch the VZV from an infected person, but chicken pox can be spread by VZV. What a strange infection and it sounds like a really miserable thing to have.

I don't understand why the doc put your husband on Zovirax cream. That's used to treat Herpes. I guess other viruses must respond to it as well. My grandma had the ocular form of shingles a few years ago. It took her over a year to recover, but then she is in her mid 80s.

Yeah, Tarabull, I read that on a Novartis site after the argument in the pharmacy. So now all the people there probably think that my husband has this huge herpes rash. Actually the shingles and herpes are from the same family of virus, but are contracted in different ways. Too confusing.

Thanks for the good wishes RichB. Hopefully the blisters are going to start healing up soon.
