The Bosque is on fire! I took this from my roof.

The Rio Grande runs through Albuquerque. The river plain is covered by a cottonwood and brush forest called the "Bosque". It caught on fire this afternoon and has burned between 600 and 1000 acres, threatened hundreds of homes. At one point the fire was moving 20 mph.

It is also threatening the Rio Grande Nature Center, but it looks like they are getting it contained.

"Human" cause suspected. It started right where I-40 crosses the river. The winds have died down, too. Mayor Chavez and Gov. Richardson were both down there, having just gotten back from a trip to Mexico to drum up trade.

I took that about 6:00, it was near its peak at that time. They've got at least three choppers dropping water. One is a SkyCrane that carries 2800 gallons or so.

It snarled traffic going west on I-40, north on I-25, up and down Coors, N. 4th, 2nd etc. Montano and Paseo del Norte going west were brought to a near standstill. I-40 was closed for a while.

Path, that's some distressing goings-on out there. Hope they get it under control and my best vibes out to you for rain...

It's under control, but the Mayor is pissed. Fireworks suspected, burning some of the most pristine Bosque ecosystem in the area.

I read that thing about the firewqorks causing it, Path. It's a real shame that much damage was done.

And yeah, Strat, I was thinking the same thing about that bastard!

Phaedrus, have you seen the news? Again, last night. A new fire with two close but different ignition points and not part of the previous day's fire.
Montano is closed from 4th to Coors.

Parts of the bosque again burst into flames
