Wal-Mart sells De-natured Alcohol in quart and gallon cans back in the Paint Dept. Ask in that Dept.
HEET gas line antifreeze in the yellow (NOT RED) bottle is a good fuel also.

I buy my alcohol in gallon cans from Lowes.

It really is denatured alcohol and they keep it in their paint thinner section. It is made from ethanol (ethyl alcohol). But don't drink it unless you want to feel really bad or worse!

Try Home Depot they have it in gallon cans which is much cheaper than quarts.....

If you really want them to think you're a terrorist, go load up on high-nitrate fertilizer, and as you're about to drive away, ask them if there's any place around that sells diesel fuel.

really 3 different sources for stove alcohol.
1) worst is rubbing alcohol from your local supermarket. this has a high water content, so low heat output/weight but it is cheap.

2) Local paint or hardware store, look in the paint solvent/cleaning section for either ethanol or methanol

3) car store for brake line anti freeze called Heet. I looked in my local store but most had rather nasty additives.

The denatured alcohol I get from Lowes is ethanol, with small amounts of methanol, acetone, & methyl isobutyl ketone to make you sick if you drink it.

Yea,
At Lowes or Home Depot, look at the ingredients on the cans of denatured alcohol. The cheap stuff has all kinds of bad stuff in it. Get the one that is mostly alcohol (ethanol with some methanol added.)

Easy question though. What kind of container do you use for your stove alcohol when hiking? I have only used a canister stove before and want to make a pepsi can one.

Plastic pop bottles, used "sport" drink bottles, ect.
Just be sure to mark them as poison and NOT drink from them.

Figure about 1 fl oz alcohol for each pint (2 cups) water boiled.

I was in my local Kroger looking for rubbing Alcohol when I noticed there were 2 kinds. One had 70% alcohol. It was the cheapest at 2 for a dollar or something like that. The other one was 90% alcohol, so I tried it and it worked much better. Faster boil times, hotter and cleaner burning. It costs about a dollar but I didn't mind paying a little more for the good stuff. Don't like the additives in a lot of the other stuff. You don't know what you might be breathing. Aren't we supposed to be out in nature to smell the fresh air anyhow? .........my 2 cents worth.

nalgene makes a plastic fuel bottle that has a pouring spout, which stores inside the bottle.

I like to use the denatured alcohol from the paint dept. , burns well, and no fumes,, sometimes I found that heet gave off a funny smell, and I was concerned that maybe something nasty was getting into what I was cooking. I've got one of the swedish mil surplus stoves that comes with a fuel bottle,, nice deal really, got it for $10 last year and I really like it.

trekkngirl - Be sure and measure the alcohol you put into the stove. Sgt Rock uses the cap from his alcohol bottle. You can also after measureing 1 fl oz into the stove, carefully scratch a mark into the inner side of the stove at the fuel level. It's very easy to put to much fuel into the stove and waste it.
I saw your Nashville meets Phil pics. You clean up pretty nice. ;)

karo - I hate rubbing alcohol. Never use it. It makes soot on the bottoms of my pots and gets all over everthing.

swamp yankee - I've got one of those too. Works like a champ, but is ten times heavyer than my homemade burners.

You will not be able to fly with alcohol fuel.
Are y'all driving?
Your alcohol stove might be taken from you also if it has been used and alcohol vapors are detected.

I can't complain about the weight,, the whole kit weighs 2 pounds, and I think you could play baseball with the trangia burner,, I made both the pepsi stove and the cat can type,, but the pepsi is a bit too light for me,, I'm always concerned about wind gusts,,the cat stove is nice too though,,

1) Heet (yellow bottle is good). You can find it at any gas station, general store, or 7-11. Plan to use your own bottle cause you can't re-seal it once you pry off the cap. Lipton Brisk plastic bottles are best.
2) It's a sin to burn Everclear.
3) Manuka - Heet is gas line antifreeze. DO NOT put it in your brake fluid tank. If you do, please don't drive behind me.

Karo,
You can get isopropanol (rubbing alcohol) in 99% solution. I've been wanting to try it instead of ethanol/methanol. It's got to be better than methanol fumes. The problem with sooting from isopropanol is from the 30% water in the solution. If the 90 or 99% solution doesn't have water, it ought not soot and should produce just as much heat.

BS - I tried the Iso-HEET product which is almost pure isopropyl alcohol - still sooted badly - I was trying to come up with a stove to burn it clean but finally had to give up - IMO its impossible to get isopropyl to burn clean outside of a pressurized system like is used with white gas - I tried to get a version of the tea candle stove to burn iospropyl and had some limited success but finally decided the process was too sensitive to be reasonable - the idea there is to use a heated pressure chamber with only 1 hole/jet - if the jet is strong enough then the iospropyl will be mixed with air sufficiently to burn clean - takes a strong jet however and I considered it a bit risky for general use when I had a stove come apart due to the pressure used.
