just out of curiousity
when backpacking, are you in it more for the hiking part, or for the camping part?

dammit ppl not a one of you answered the question ~resist urge to kill~

let me ask again when BACKPACKING. not car camping, not posting on a message board about backpacking, but when backpacking, do you like the hiking part, or camping part of BACKPACKING. this should be simple enough even for bacpac to understand. got it? good. try again.

the answer to your question...
2 scoops is too limiting...its not about either, its about both...its about experience and living in the moment...why must there be a choice??? Its about doing something beyond the self, beyond the "standard", being part of the larger whole. Your question creates boundries and walls...I get to the wilderness to eliminate the boundries and walls and time...Its not about material concepts like miles, hiking, camping, ultralight or anything like that...its about spirit and letting it soar into the void and beyond, its about letting go of binding/limiting thoughts like your question...anyway, thats what its all about for me, for others it might not be so grand.

2ssssscoops, when backpacking, I most enjoy the backpacking part of it. The hiking, camping and picture taking are the little extras that go with the activity. I haven't heard bacpac whining yet, but then I am deaf in one ear and he does hike thousands of miles away from me.

I hike. I rarely camp anymore. I live in the Catskills so I can pretty much get anywhere & out in one day. The same is true for the Adirondacks. I do take some long canoe trips. I like hiking at night & not really socialable although I will stop & talk on the trail for a few minutes. I will always help people that ask. Mostly this is just getting them on the right trail & then I drop over the side.(bushwhacking)

My wife camps with a pop-up. I'll help her with that & stop in from time to time, but don't stay unless she doesn't have anybody else. Many times I have to get up at midnight or 3am for my long irregular hours for NYS.

IT ALL DEPENDS UPON THE TIME OF DAY.

DURING DAYTIME I'M IN IT FOR THE HIKING.

DURING NIGHTIME, I'M IN IT FOR THE CAMPING PART.

THE TWO SEEM TO GO TOGETHER. I WOULDN'T LIKE IT WITHOUT BOTH..

I am really out for the hiking to enjoy the beauty. Making camp at the end of the day is great though. Making some kind of pasta or rice meal and having some freeze dry cheesecake! mmmmm and then falling into an exhuasted sleep for ten hours or so. It is all great

As far as a sereious answer to your question, I think the time of day thing makes a lot of sense. Personally, I love sitting around the fire chatting with folks. There's something about that that I find some serenity in. Some good company and a few refreshments before some well earned sack time is a good feeling to me. Then, when morning hits, the prospect of getting into the day with a hike whatever the agenda is has its merits too...

Its the hiking part. Otherwise, all of us would be at KOA setting up tents next to RVs sitting around a campfire, drinking beer with the motorcycle crowd, eating Kentucky Fried Chicken, and using flush toliets. Hey, I can go out on my patio at home for that kind of amiance.

But how can you match setting up a LNT campsite on the top of a mountain watching the sunset. Or waking up next to a remote stream where the trout have never seen a hook. and catching some nice trout for breakfast . Yes, its the hiking part.

If I was mainly into the hiking part, then I'd just dayhike. If I was mainly into just the camping, then I'd just car camp.

I backpack because I love to do both. Not one more than the other.

ok ill chime in with my answer. personally, i like the camping part better. and when i say camping, i mean being at the wilderness campsite

Oooh, I gotta agree with Buddur. Backpacking into an area inaccessible any other way is its own reward. Sitting around a campfire socializing with people is also a big plus.

But hey, I like car camping with my family too.
