What are the symptoms of Giardia?

Giardia Symptoms
Diarrhea, bloating, flatulence (farting), stomach cramps, fatigue and weight loss. Those are the classical giardia symptoms given in the medical literature.

From my own personal experience and that of outdoor people interviewed, we'll go a step further. And we'll go into the symptoms from other problems you might have from drinking bad water or eating bad food.

Giardia Symptoms Cycle
Typically someone gets giardia symptoms about two weeks after ingesting the critter. You'll often feel off your feed. The first symptom is often a loss of appetite. You should be ravenous after hiking 10 miles, but instead you suddenly don't feel like eating anything.

The giardia has taken hold of your gut. There is rumbling down there. Churning guts. You may start farting. You'll probably do some belching. And if you've been a member of the Giardia Club before, you may begin thinking back to the places you ate or drank a week or two ago.

Giardia Symptoms and Diarrhea
Next, you'll probably notice the main giardia symptoms most people - a bout of diarrhea. The Runs. The Trots.

There are some differences in types of diarrheas, which as a member of the Giardia Club you will become well acquainted with in your travels. We'll go into the gruesome details in a moment.

It's important for you to have an understanding of the symptoms of some other intestinal problems because it makes a difference in treatment. And it makes a difference in what you can expect in the next few days or weeks of your trip. That's why recognizing giardia symptoms is important

Who can tell me at what temperature does Giardia die?

And do you have documentation to prove it?

I once read somewhere that it died at around 150 degrees. But nobody will believe me. Now I want to prove it.

From a href="http://www.princeton.edu/~oa/manual/water.shtml">OA Guide to Water Purification:

Boiling
Boiling is the most certain way of killing all microorganisms. According to the Wilderness Medical Society, water temperatures above 160° F (70° C) kill all pathogens within 30 minutes and above 185° F (85° C) within a few minutes. So in the time it takes for the water to reach the boiling point (212° F or 100° C) from 160° F (70° C), all pathogens will be killed, even at high altitude. To be extra safe, let the water boil rapidly for one minute, especially at higher altitudes since water boils at a lower temperature (see page 68.)

aw dammit

I got giardia 1 1/2 years ago. If you think you have it, you have my sympathies. It sucked, and I believe I still have some remaining symptoms.

The most tell tale symptom, in my experience, is the smell (of the BM's and the farts). You would not believe a living thing could make such a smell.

The runs weren't that bad. When I got hungry, my stomach hurt in a new and different way.

Good luck!

If you have to ask about the symptoms, you don't got it... You will know... It will put a burden on your vacation for a few days.

well i am not sure, I think might just be a hypochondriac. My last hike about two weeks ago I used Aqua Mira for the firs time. Now I think I have a low grade stomach virus i think. sort of grumbly, headachy, not bad runs, Gas is nothing new. Just don't feel good. I think I might switch back to my filter, just incase.

The symtoms can look different for different people. You may very well have it. They can determine it pretty easy with different tests. Then you can get treated.

I also think that two people can drink the same water and have different reactions due to lots of variables.
