bumble bees have invaded my compost pile! I don't have the heart to spray the poor fuzzy things, but if I dig them out I don't think either me or the bees will be too happy. & kid says they are an endangered species. Any suggestions?

Are they bumble bees, yellowjackets (they burrow) or some other type of burrowing wasps?

Heres what you do: rent a bumblee outfit, put it on, and start dancing around in your backyard. You see, they will think you're their fearless leader. Then you...

Ah forget it. Stupid idea.

IF you decide to kill them, do so with a few teaspoons of diatomaceous earth at night with a red light.

They can't see the red light and your compost won't be screwed up by diatomaceous earth.

big fuzzy bumble bees. not honey bees or wasps. I bet since I already shoveled into their nest, that the only option will be a mercifully quick death.

and some of them are white & fuzzy. Weird.

If they're not bothering you, why not leave them alone? Everything has it's place. The buzzing of bees is a calming sound.

Most of what agitates a bug is a human waving their arms around.

That agitates me too.

yeah me too. Mostly if you don't bug them, bugs will just sniff around and then move on.

Course, I'm from Maine and part of our entertainment as children was letting mosquitos land on us, begin feeding, then flex our arm muscles so the bug couldn't escape. =D

lol, twigeater.
the problem with the bees is that I have to move the composter. Actually half of it has been moved already. I've decided to bundle up tonite, and just move the rest of the pile, bees be dammed. that way, I am not killing them outrite, they still have a chance to relocate. guess I am a bleeding heart type afterall.

I think bumble bees are really pretty cool, though I have never had to deal with more than one of them checking out my space.

Hope their migration to your new location goes well and you can keep enjoying them.

final score=bees-0, beekiller- ?
the deed has been done, poor things. I threw the compost all over the place, also some into empty, relocated composter- new home for them maybe? Very strange to have buzzing all around, but no stings: only two or three even tried to get revenge for their sisters. That makes me feel even worse. Funny thing is, when I checked after with a flashlight, I couldn't find any bees anywhere.

Too bad I couldn't have done that in daylight hours. There were some very cool other bugs in there with the bees. Too dark to make out what they were, and too fast to catch. I thought i knew everything that lived in my garden, but this year it seems full of surprises.

Depending on your location... probably leafcutter bees in the SW or carpenter bees if in the east. Neither are endangered.

I've never heard of carpenter bees living in a compost pile. They've done heavy damage to my In-laws' new porch, though. They didn't use pressure-treated lumber.

Don't you guys know bummble bees? these things were furry, fuzzy,& so big they shouldn't be able to fly. I'm in Ontario though, and there are different bees all over the continent.

I'm bringing home a baby bumblebee,
Won't my mommy be so proud of me,
(Cup hands together as if holding bee)

I'm bringing home a baby bumblebee,
Ouch! It stung me!
(Shake hands as if just stung)

I'm squishing up the baby bumblebee,
Won't my mommy be so proud of me,
('Squish' bee between palms of hands)

I'm squishing up a baby bumblebee,
Ooh! It's yucky!
(Open up hands to look at 'mess')

I'm wiping off the baby bumblebee,
Won't my mommy be so proud of me,
(Wipe hands off on shirt)

I'm wiping off the baby bumblebee,
Now my mommy won't be mad at me!
(Hold hands up to show they are clean)
