Canoe trip
Me and 2 buddies in a canoe for 3 days straight. how fast does a canoe travel in semi fast, flooded water with at least two men rowing the entire time? how much water is required per day (50 oz)? just looking for some input, because were shipping off in a week. i have no clue where this river flows, and dont want to until i get there. we'll have to hitchhike back so if any body lives in NC and would like to give 3 bums a ride to the nearest truck stop or whereever just let me know. any input is appreciated. bigmack459@hotmail.com

A canoe can go pretty fast if you're bouncing off the shores and trees all the time. Figure a gallon of drinking water per person per day. Keep all youe belongings in watertight bags, and lash everything, including the coolers and cookpots, to the inside of the canoe. You'll capsize at least once, if it's not tied down, you'll never get it back.

Interesting... I guess it sounds like something i'd do, lol. "semi fast flooded water" I've done 60 miles in a day before with the current, 35 miles into a current in one day... Depends on how often you have to portage, if you take breaks, how hard you're pushing yourself, if you actually have canoeoing skills... for one thing you don't 'row' a canoe, you paddle. Yeah, i have several thousand miles in a canoe under me, if you have any questions just ask.

ok, so if you do not have a car
how will you transport your canoe?
are you renting one?
if so, then the outfitter can provide all the maps for you and rec. trip ideas for you and your buddies.

this sounds like a trip report that...
we'll be reading in the headlines of CNN...

Missing and pressumed dead, 3 stupid fools who had no right being anywhere near water. they had no plan, no food, no idea and no brains.

if you go into the wilderness without a plan, you deserve what you get. Its idiots like you that make rescue persons hate their jobs.

im not losing anyone
no one is going to die, maybe a few bumps and bruises. i did the linville gorge trail in april during the flood. i spent 5 days with 2 changes of clothes water and food. i slept in a cave for 2 nights. it was rough but i made it, i know water and trials are complete opposites. what do you a raft for more space? MORE INPUT!!!

a raft
i meant what do you think about using a raft instead of a canoe?

I'm thinking thaa a paddle would be much better for this misadventure than an oar. If they do use an oar, it sounds like these three people are only going to have one in the water, anyway.

I'm the Other Guy in this Boat
Well we got a little smarter and did a little more planning for this "misadventure" I'll let you people in on the plan because I would like as much feedback as possible for a safe trip. The three of us, completely inexperienced will leave on Tuesday night down the Cape Fear river from near Sanford NC. Our goal is to paddle for 22 hrs a day for the next three days and reach the Atlantic Ocean, which is about 175 miles. We will rotate in four hr shifts with one person resting with the other two paddling. We may also have another man in a kayak to give us a 4-way rotation. Do you think we can make it?

Also there are four dams on this route, I am not concerned about encountering them in the daytime, but during the night I am not sure of the best method, any suggestions?

There was a canoe sitting on an island in the Upper Iowa River two winters ago. I debated trying to haul it outta there.

WAS IT YOU GUYS??!

Hey and listen to stikmon, he knows of what he speaks. River + no water + dragging the canoe... hehehe

I don't like 3 adults in one canoe. I would rather take a canoe & kyack or 2 canoes. I would only take a child as a 3rd person or for relatively short transport to an island destination etc. Good Luck

Capefear Trip
Hey,

About 10 of us are preparing to take a trip down the Cape Fear river from the Sanford,NC area in canoes. We plan to canoe for two and ˝ days (Friday, Saturday, and ˝ on Sunday). We are looking for river information to assist us in our planning efforts.

Would anyone have any information that might be of assistance? (Damns? Camping spots? Rapids?, Other?)

Thanks,

Don

I would suggest doing a search on the various govermental agencies like fish and wildlife, national wildlife refuge, etc...
