Gear that I do not really need
Ok here is the delema! The outfitter near me had a Walrus Trekker Tarp on sale brand new for $80, it is a few years old. Looks like a great tarp/tent although it is alittle heavy. Should I get it?

How heavy is it? The point of using a tarp is weight savings. If it's so heavy there's no weight savings, don't get it.

I was thinking about offering $60 that would be half price. It weighs 2#12oz. and is 66sqft. It is a pretty neat tarp setup. check it out on msrcorp.com

If what you are desribing is a Walrus Trekker Tarp, it's 100 sq.ft. The new MSR version is 66 sq. ft. Also, for some reason the Walrus was slightly lighter than the smaller MSR model.

Whatever you do, buy it. I have one and use it the majority of the time. Sass and Birch have one as well and they love it.

Yes Buddha it is the Walrus version 100sqft that is huge! Seems sort of overkill for one person you could have a freaking party in there! I think I will go down this weekend and offer the manager $60 to see what he says. Do you know if the MSR mesh insert will still fit in it?

It should Lthiker. And I believe that the mesh insert didn't get the huge size reduction that the tarp did when MSR took over Walrus.

We've been using out Trekker tarp almost exclusively for three or four years I think. I have never gotten wet under it. If it's pouring rain out you can pack up your bag and pad, drop the insert, open up the front flap and tie it off and sit on the front porch for breakfast. You can open your eyes in the night and see what's going on outside. It's really a versital shelter. It's a palace for Birch and I, Buddur has actually gotten lost in his Trekker tarp and it's the only shelter Buddha owns that his feet don't hang out the end!

Walrus' And MSR's Trekker Tarps Are The Same Size
The Walrus brand Trekker Tarp is 66 sq ft, not 100 sq ft like they claimed...it was a misprint!

Bought it! $49 bucks! I coulndn't pass it up for that price. Now to see if I can find the insert somewhere!
I figure that I will still use my silnylon tarp for nice weather, but if it really looks like it will rain and be nasty out I will bring the Trekker Tarp.
Got to love new gear!

Hck, that's the only sale price for it. I know it costs more than the tarp itself, but you have to grab it, it's a good price and you won't be sorry.

Get The Mesh Insert And You Won't Reget It
Insert weight does not include 4 necessary ground stakes...or stuffsack I'll bet'cha.

I just recently purchased a backpack (Granite Gear "Virga")from Backcountry Gear Limited and their service is great...so far (today I just returned the backpack for credit of the item).
