Just want to share some of the reasons why I always come back to loving living in NYC...

Where else can you celebrate the 4th of July while standing on the roof of a friend's apartment, in Brooklyn, sipping margaritas, and getting the view of not one, but at least four different fireworks displays, with a panorama view of the big city as the backdrop?

Where else can you spend a day wandering around the greatest of city parks, Central Park, and getting lost, only to discover that you were once lost two years ago in the same area?

Yesturday, I spent a few hours walking around the park and came across the Boathouse area where I watched groups of people out on the lake in rowboats. Some of the boats had gandoliers (sp?) like you'd find in Venice! One of them was singing to an elderly couple lazily reclined in the boat.

I also watched two other groups, with younger groups of friends, having a lighthearted race around the lake. I also watched as they crashed (no one capsized) into each other.

Then later on, as I stood on a beautiful arched footbridge, I was witness to the elegant landing of a large white crane.

After that I wandered over to the "plaza", an area on the other side of the boat lake that has a gigantic fountain with a staue of an angel in the middle. There was a young man with dreadlocks sitting and reading a book with a medium sized speaker blasting out old-timey music. I keep waiting for someone to break out into a waltz! What a romantic setting!

When I tired of that, I headed further South (I had entered the park from the upper 70's on the East side and was working my way down through the park). I passed a group of African drummers near the Ampitheater only to walk distractedly into the middle of a group of skateboarders practing jumps off of a small wall! Eeck!

Continuing on my way, I heard Techo/Disco music coming from the near-distance to my right (the East). I of course strolled on over to see what was going on. And before my very eyes....in the middl eof a bocked off walkway, was an impropteu roller rink complete with a DJ. These people had on real rollar skates - not rollar blades - and man, you should have seen the crazy stuff this gang was up to! One man, who had on loose billowing pants with one of the most sculpted torsos I've ever seen, was skating both forward and backward in slow motion with a bottle of water balanced on his head! Then there was another guy who could zoom sideways in a crouched postion through the crowd of skaters like an arrow. There were also various couplings of people rollar dancing! Quite a few were rolling all in arabesque positions or spinning and jumping like gold medal ice skaters!

And let me describe the DJ - he was a huge rasta man - with techni-colored billowing pants and shirt - a head full of dreds - an d the biggest sunglasses on the planet. He reminded me of "Sho'nuff" from the movie "The Electric Dragon".

Man, I laughed my butt off watching these people do their thing! What a contest of who could look and skate the craziest!

After they packed up - I then ambled across the Sheep Meadow and made my way back to the subway in the rich amber light of the the setting sun.

What a great day!

(would have picture if my camera battery had not died on me :( )

WOW!

This reminds me of one of my favorite lines from Ghostbusters--hell, everything reminds me of some dang line from Ghostbusters--from Winston Zedemore(Ernie Hudson)......"Man, I love this town!!!"....spoken with arms outstretched and covered with "marshmallow" from the Sta Puft Man.

Nice report, kid!

In NYC, I saw a bum take a dump right in the middle of the sidewalk once.

yeah, well, who hasn't?

"that's life in the big city" - what a great phrase - you can completely wash away every horrible moment possible to have living here by repeating the mantra "that's life in the big city"

I've got that one beat, a bum once took a dump on the train...nice, really nice

Ewwwww!

My sister was riding the Baltimore Light Rail train and was hit by the strong stench of crap.
She's thinking, "This is no ordinary fart!"
Sure enough, there was a nice turd on a seat a few rows away.

Just yesterday my youngest son and I were swimming in a county park lake and there was a "floater" nearby.
(Cue the "Jaws" music)

There was a show on the tube about Central Park just the other night... They said the angel in the fountain is called The Angel Of The Waters and they put it there to celebrate the completion of a water pipeline into the city in 18-something-or-other.

They said the big pasture (13 acres?) used to be a lake, too.

Fascinating, I know...

I guess NYC has it's plus's, but I like the country's peace & quiet. I like polite and not push & shove. I don't want to hear people screaming at each other or their kids. I don't like the sounds of trains, buses, sirens & car horns. I like listening to my own music (or none at all) & not someone else's blasting. I like being the only one on the road. I like the dark & the sounds of nature. I do have to drive 10 miles for aquart of milk & an hour for for a decent store. I've learned to do all my own repairs. I went up to Lake George to watch the fireworks as my wife, daughter, son-in-law & grandson were camping at Lake Luzerne. I would have gone with them but I had to work Sunday.....that is until I got to work. Now I have 3 weeks off & drove up to Lk George (again) for the day.

we alos had a great time in the Big Aplle. we had frineds come in from Fla. i love when people stay with us. we get to give them the grand tour of the city.

Friday's highlights.

1. car crash
2. car chase
3. 2 kids dump stolen car on a wrong way street and take off running like hell
4. good guys chase bad guys
5. cops arrive on the crime scene
6. i walk past cop on his walkie talkie and over here him say "how was i supposed to know they were chasing a car thief? they just ran past me"
7. posing for pictuers with the stolen car while it was smoking from the car crash
8. watch the cops get the bad guys and arrest him.
not very offten do you see everything unfold in front of you (and have pics!!)
Now thats what I call entertainment NY style.

ps, yes the FLa folks had a great time and never will forget there ny trip.

Twinks - nice write up. Echoes a lot of sentiment in me as to why I love this town. Glad you enjoyed the rooftop entertainment. Wish you could have stayed longer...

Path - I am sooo sorry we are going to miss you. I really wanted to get together with you and, of course, the one weekend that we can't get around...

Mapleleaf - "Whatcha gonna do when they come for you, Bad Boys, Bad Boys" ...

Artex - I recommend you carry depends around with you. You never know when a bum will need them...

Tom T - Can't wait to get you up here...
Tilt - pics will be posted, hopefully tonight...

Jerbear, Taboo and other interested folks -
