“KCBS in Los Angeles has reported Kobe Bryant, Lakers super star, has been arrested in Vail, Colorado on a felony sexual asault charge. Bryant who turned himself in to the police on July 3 is free on $25,000 bail. Apparently police found enough evidence in a Vail hotel room to arrest Kobe.” 8:28:46 PM 7/06/03 “Lakers star posted $25,000 bond http://msn.espn.go.com/nba/news/2003/0706/1577357.html?partnersite=espn EAGLE, Colo. -- Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant has posted a $25,000 bond in Eagle on a felony count of sexual assault and has been released, according to the Eagle County sheriff's office. In a statement Sunday, authorities said the warrant was issued after deputies investigated a report made Tuesday claiming sexual misconduct by Bryant. The report said the incident happened in a hotel in the Edwards area of Eagle County that night. After a series of interviews and a review of the physical evidence, investigators met with representatives for District Attorney Mark Hurlbert and concluded they had enough evidence for the felony sexual assault count, the statement said. "During the investigation Bryant was cooperative with investigators and remains cooperative with authorities," the sheriff's office said in a prepared statement. Bryant turned himself in at the sheriff's detention facility in Eagle on Friday and posted a bond of $25,000, authorities said. Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak issued a statement expressing surprise. "These allegations are completely out of character of the Kobe Bryant we know," it said. "For the seven years he's been with us he has been one of the finest young men we've known and a wonderful asset to both our team and our community. "However, since this is a legal matter being handled by the authorities in Colorado, we must refrain from further comment at this time." Few details are being released after an order by Judge Russell Granger that the case would be sealed to the public. Public Information Officer Kim Andree said the fax would be the only statement made available from the sheriff's office at this point. Bryant, a guard, averaged 26.6 points and 5.8 assists in four games in the NBA Finals against the New Jersey Nets in 2002, and he was picked to the 2001-02 All-NBA First Team, according to the Lakers. The 24-year-old was named MVP of the 2002 All-Star Game after getting 31 points. He has the record as being the young All-Star in the NBA. posting 18 points and 6 rebounds in the 1998 game in New York. He also was the youngest player to debut in the NBA, at the age of 18 years, two months and 11 days. As a high school student, he was selected by USA Today and Parade Magazine as National High School Player of the Year. He married in April 2001 and he and his wife had their first child, a daughter, in January.” 8:58:23 PM 7/06/03 “Kobe, Kobe, Kobe. Learn to control yourself, my son.” 9:02:53 PM 7/06/03 “at first i wanted to agree and say yea that does sound out of character for kobe but then this: "he became engaged to Laine when she was an 18-year-old high school student." how old was he when he was trolling high schools for dates? sounds kinda like a predator to me. but that would be jumping to conclusions that i shouldnt jump to.” 9:52:39 PM 7/06/03 “He was 22, she was 18 - it's not necessarily all that egregious. Still - the whole thing don't look good.” 10:06:21 PM 7/06/03 “And this is news...why?” 10:09:19 PM 7/06/03 “It's not news when an animal acts like an animal. It's what you'd expect from members of his socio-economic-racial-educational class. Everyday that one of these animals doesn't commit a sexual, drug, or weapons-related crime there should be a headline.” 7:19:07 AM 7/07/03 “no. of course not, tilt. i have dated women more than four years younger than me. still, its a trend. there was a rift in his family over it. denizen, wtf? youre just trying to bait ppl, right?” 7:32:02 AM 7/07/03 “Kobe is a major city in western Honshu.” 7:36:59 AM 7/07/03 “It should be more like, this week's NBA deviant is.....” 8:24:08 AM 7/07/03 “Geez, folks. Isn't the concept of innocent until proven guilty still a viable concept in this country, or has that gone the way of the Homeland Security act. There is nothing about this charge that even makes much sense if you know much about Bryant. Before you hang the guy, at least wait until some facts other than the charge come out. As to Kobe trolling high schools, he was 18 when he played his first NBA game, that was six years ago. He and Vanessa have never been the subject of any controversy. I'll give the guy the benefit of the doubt in this one. It wouldn't be the first time some bimbo has tried to milk a wealthy super-star for some bucks. Come on guys, Kobe is certainly no Mike Tyson.” 8:31:43 AM 7/07/03 “Then there was that kid from Hampton, Virginia who knocked a woman's teeth out with a chair during a brawl in a bowling alley. He's a major "star" now. Name that fool!” 8:32:20 AM 7/07/03 “Allen Iverson?” 8:46:30 AM 7/07/03 “Yes! I wonder if he offered to pay for her dental work after makin' all that money?” 8:50:06 AM 7/07/03 “"no. of course not, tilt..." 2scoops 07:32:02 AM 07/07/03 Raisen overdose?” 9:04:58 AM 7/07/03 “Allen Iverson?" Dr Pivo 08:46:30 AM 07/07/03 Yeah, I think he's a different type of person than Bryant. He has thug written all over him. At least Kobe Bryant looks respectable and not like some felon with a bunch of prison tats.” 9:24:11 AM 7/07/03 “So did OJ.” 9:25:00 AM 7/07/03 “Not quite Packman. OJ and his wives had a history of violence and abuse. That is well-documented. Except for a little arrogance when he was a rookie, Kobe has presented himself about as honorably as Tiger Woods (the world's most boring celebrity).” 9:31:20 AM 7/07/03 “OMG - Was I called slanted, I mean Tilted?” 9:33:43 AM 7/07/03 “Doesnt matter, he can slaughter 18 people in front of 20 more and get away with it.” 9:35:43 AM 7/07/03 “What an horrific insult! LOL” 9:36:14 AM 7/07/03 “"Doesnt matter, he can slaughter 18 people in front of 20 more and get away with it" I don't know what that means. Are you speaking of Kobe, OJ, or Tiger Woods?” 9:38:05 AM 7/07/03 “Nobody had a bad thing to say about Ted Bundy until he was caught. As a matter of fact Ann Rule (the author) volunteered at a suicide hotline for a year with him. She said of him before he was caught that she would have loved him to date her daughter if she had one and that he was an intelligent gentleman. Moral of the story is: You NEVER know!” 10:45:45 AM 7/07/03 “Tango, I think it's more a matter of what is expected of NBA players, or professional sports players in general, because they live their lives under the microscope. Many of them are expected to be violent drug abusers from the word go. Others seem to have enough character to stay out of trouble. Ted Bundy was not a public figure all his adult life like pro athletes are. In fact, his only claim to fame was the horrible crimes he was convicted of.” 10:57:37 AM 7/07/03 “geez, this is a surprise.” 10:59:15 AM 7/07/03 “I smell gold digger. I have heard Kobe was in Colorado with his wife and kid. And 2scoops, Kobe met his wife at a commercial shoot. He wasn't out trolling high schools.” 12:24:40 PM 7/07/03 12:36:55 PM 7/07/03 “What's the big surprise! I am sure he voted Demorcrat. I guarantee he is a liberal. So he is right on track. Next thing he will be the Governor of California.” 12:44:05 PM 7/07/03 “Some of these things are not as they appear. I remember a couple of incidents in Detroit 5 or 10 years ago - one involving Derrick Coleman, another Dennis Rodman - which turned out to be false. Of course, I also remember that Juwan Howard was supposed to be a pillar of virtue when he was at Michigan. Then he was in that whole paying-players mess and had an illegitimate child. Kobe might be guilty, but he might not. Trolling high schools? I suppose that's why Jerry Seinfeld is in prison, too, eh?” 1:09:52 PM 7/07/03 “mountainmaster, youre probably right, i just threw that out there to chew on, not to make a case against him.” 5:33:38 PM 7/07/03 5:39:01 PM 7/07/03 “2scoops, the commented sounded pretty pointed to me. Throwing things "out to chew on" really should be at least "based" on truth...don't you think? Sometimes this site gets a little "with itself" as to posters throwing stuff "out to chew on." It is frequently difficult to separate truth from garbage, and it becomes frustrating when trying to conduct some sort of serious posting to a thread.” 6:28:36 PM 7/07/03 “regardless of how it sounded, that wasnt my intent. how about "i was playing devils advocate"? personally, i think hes probably innocent. but i really just dont know.” 6:38:03 PM 7/07/03 “i even said i was jumping to conclusions i probably shouldnt jump to. what more do you want?” 6:41:14 PM 7/07/03
