ST. PAUL (AP) - A 16-year-old boy was killed when he fell about 200 feet from a cliff at a park where he had gone to watch a fireworks display.

George Blanchard, of St. Paul, was in Indian Mounds Park Thursday night to watch the Taste of Minnesota fireworks display over downtown St. Paul. He was with a 17-year-old boy when he went over the cliff about 9:50 p.m., said Bob Morrison, deputy chief of the St. Paul Fire Department.

That boy, James Johnson, said Blanchard was trying to leap to a ledge as a practical joke on his mother. "All I seen was his hands fall and then I went up to the rock and I seen him fall," Johnson said. "He wasn't screaming or nothing. He just hit every single rock all the way down."

Rope rescue teams and two medical teams responded. Morrison said the teenager was dead when he was found.

"The parents were there, it was a pretty bad thing," he said.

Indian Mounds Park, which sits on the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River and is east of Harriet Island, is a popular spot for watching fireworks. Thursday night's display went on as scheduled.

This is the first year the Taste of Minnesota festival has been held on Harriet Island instead of its 20-year home on the State Capitol grounds.”
