Saw my first black bear at about 30 ft yesterday in Shenandoah NP, kinda startled me, very nice though. Excitement and feeling of seeing something special was only slightly diminshed when realized traffic jam on way home was cars stopping to watch bear sitting on roadside.

Congrads on your first backcountry bear.

Bears are very interesting but I don't like it when the bear takes an interest in me!

How many shots did it take you to drop it? Keeping the hide?

I actually don't like the taste of bear meat, except in a stew. It adds a bit of weight to your pack too.

Hike the trail in Jersey and you're almost guaranteed to see many. Huntin season starts this Dec. They've become a problem. Gotta weed some out.

i keep hearing conflicting advice on what to do if you see one...are you suppose to stay real still or make noise?
I don't want to end up as the tasty snack

I like playing the game, man in the middle, get in between a mother and cub. They go crazy!

jenven, black bears will only eat you when you're dead and rotting. Generally. If you see one, flash it!

HPM and a friens were walking around a state park here once and his friend chuffed a pinecona at what he thought was a bush. TUrned out to be a big boar that chased after the two of them. HPM's friend shimmied up a skinny tree that bent right over and dumped him onto the boar's back. THe boar freaked and took off running.
