Anyone tried powdered eggs? I'm thinking about getting some for NH but wonder if they are worthe the hassle? Do they taste good? Can you scramble them?

Very little taste just plain. Add cut up veggies and make an omlet out of it. Make somewhat of a mess. You can scramble em up. I have also used the mix to make french toast. That was pretty yummy

Mmm. I bet french toast would work better than pancakes, that's for sure.

Have used them, mainly for baking stuff on the Bakepacker. Pretty bland alone. Probably should add some spices, maybe even hot sauce, or a fair amount of pepper. Scramble is best way to eat 'em.

French toast? yummy!

Can you share the recipe? I'm trying to come up with some great meal ideas for NH.

Four breakfasts, three lunches, three dinners, and snacks. I have a sensitive tummy and if I eat Ramen noodles for four days - it won't be pretty!

Oh yeah, it needs to all weigh as little as possible.

Sensitive tummy?

Isn't that a euphamism for "little princess who likes the crusts trimmed off her sandwiches"?

Twinkle, i have eaten them but you do need to add alot of stuff to them. ie cheese peppers, onions, hot sauce, they need some taste. i bet that if you mixed them up with some powdered milk and some cinnamon you could make a pretty good french toast.

ps it is very hard to do them overeasy!

Combine the necessary amount of water to the powder. Add a good amount of cinnamon and nutmeg. Mix. Soak bread, but not to long (3 seconds should do it) Fry em up. Top off with fresh fruit, powdered sugar, syrup.

speaking of eggs...
let's take a vote! i think that if you don't put anything in your eggs, it's not an omelette, no matter what shape the eggs are in. Tarpy insists that if you cook the eggs in the shape of an omelette, that's an omelette, even if there're no veggies or cheese or anything in it. we go over this EVERY TIME we cook eggs, LOL! so what's the consensus?

Funny you should bring this up, lyra.

Alton Brown did a whole Good Eats show on omelets the other day. Apparently, it can be an omelet without anything added to it at all.

As a matter of fact, the only time he added something to the eggs while he was making them, he called it something else. Can't remember what, there were kids talking to me then.

I have not personal had tem, but I did make them up on a trip recentley for my son, who didn't eat them. I turned to Tarabull and said "prolly a good thing, look at these things". They had looked like little sponges. She said "what? what's sorng with'em?" I have some more and I'll be trying them soon. My idea is to make sure that I spice tem up with seasoning and wrap them in the Lawvash bread, ke one of those McDonalds breakfast burrito. Maybe carry in some fresh salsa for the first day. I think there are may ways to do it, find out work works for you by trying different ways before you hit the trail!

yes it is! the only way i like my eggs is with nothing in them, and very well-cooked...like browned. which seems to be a personal affront to Tarpy, LOL! he puts lots of nasty stuff in his, and eats salsa with them. puke!

lyra, I agree with you if it doesn't have anything in it it isn't a omelette. It is just eggs in a different shape.

I must agree with the troll on this omelette question...it is the contents that make it an omelette, not the shape. Regardless of what the dictionary says. :)

Without cheese, or ham, or something, it is just scrambled eggs.

And now I am getting hungry.

I'm with lyra. Everytime I order an omelet in the cafeteria they ask if I want cheese on it - an omelet comes with cheese, if I didn't want cheese and stuff on it, it's just eggs.

Twinkle Toes, try Mountain House scrambled eggs with bacon. Wal-mart carries them for a little cheaper than the outdoor stores do. I add a little more of the real bacon bits and some parmesan cheese, maybe some butter buds (also from Was-mart) and croutons. Usually I eat one package, but it's ays 2 servings. Also, if you like oatmeal or cream of wheat, look in the cereal section (wal-mart again) for the freeze dried fruit and packaged ceral toppings. I put two packages of instant cereal in a ziploc and add a small hand full of stuff to it, maybe a teaspoon of brown sugar if it's plain cereal. yummy.

My tummy acts up on the trail, so I carry a supply of immodium, pepto bismol and pepsid ac. Usually I'm fine, but sometimes those pre-packed b'ping foods get to me.

Which powdered eggs do you use? Does it matter? I've been using the ones from King Arthur Flour. I started out using them with mixes in the Bakepacker like Stumprider said.

I don't get the plain egg thing at all. Fresh, powdered, freeze dried... they need Something, fer gosh sakes. Those for-real Oscar Meyer bacon bits are quite handy on the trail.

But croutons?? Are those eggs or a freakin' salad? <VBG>

One word: retch!

We ate powdered (reconstituted) eggs while serving in the Philippines. I'd never touch the damn things again with a long pole!

Twinkle - powdered eggs plain are so-so. You definitely have to do something w/ them to make them tasiter. Cow Patty made us a nice breakfast once... Scrambled Eggs (powdered), salsa, cheese, etc. All wrapped in a tortilla. Yum

I took eggs on a trip once. I do not like to do dishes, so I put the eggs in a freezer bag and put the whole bag in boiling water. Cooks the eggs fine. Leaves a clean cook pot.
