“Can anyone suggest a bug repellent that actually works. I am starting to feel like the all you can eat buffet!”

“ha ha ha well i have a great one, but lol it is only good if you are by yourself... I went for 9 days and I have absolutely no bites, i did not take a shower at all, i washed the nessecary parts with a special foaming wash and that was it....

“When the bugs start biting me I just walk faster. But seriously for a second, I started using this Lemon Eucalyptus Cream. It seams to work all but the diehard bugs. A little caution though, don’t apply it if you are all ready bit up. This stuff burns worse than deet on open wounds.”

I'll pass on the 'people repellent' one, but I'll give a shot to Lemon Eucalyptus Cream.

“Sawyers Broad Spectrum has deet for mosquitoes and a special thing for no-see-ums.

Permythrin-based sprays seem to work well, although it's not supposed to be used on skin. But I figure it can't be worse than deet, and it does seem effective.”

“Amyg used a citrus/lemon/citranella lotion type spray that she had from Burts Bee's all natural stuff. Smelled really nice. Seemed to work well. If the bugs are bad enough abou tthe only thing that will work is a headnet.”

“I have to agree that the best defense is clothing. Even a lightweight windbreaker seems to be thick enough to prevent mosquito bites. When it's too warm, though, I've had pretty good luck with the combination sunscreen/repellant stuff made by Off! I also just tried some stuff I found at REI that was labeled "great for kids!" It had that eucalyptus-citronella smell going. Finally, when hiking, it does seem to be true about just hiking faster....”

“The termites are swarming today. They are from out in the garden and yard, not near the house. That's taken care of. It's kind of neat to watch them. They drift slowly on the slight breeze, getting snagged out of the air and off of whatever they land on by the hundreds of lizards, spiders, predatory flies, birds, and everything elese that's interested in an easy meal in the yard. Not to mention it's fun to knock them out of the air with the garden hose. Hit them with water and their wings fall right off, then some critter comes along and eats it. :D”

Tarpy's mom has a dog, and is worried about lyme disease and all that (well for people, and if dogs get it I'm sure she's worried about that too); but she doesn't use chemical pesticides...I'll have to ask her what she does use on her dog. Some witchy kinda cocktail of herbs I bet. HA.”

“Princess Sparkles, dogs can be vaccinated against lyme disease. We had out dogs done, even though none of us has ever had a tick.

I don't know why they can't come up with something for people if they can do it for dogs!

RE: mutt vs Brittany....

We have a nice rescue mutt and we have a pure bred hunting dog (german shorthair pointer....demeanor much like a brittneys).

The pure bred dog is always having health issues. The mutt is never going to the vet except for his shots. The hunting dog is an attention whore who never settles down and can't get enough excercise. Birch takes her out for ten mile runs and she immediately wants to play. She runs circles around my feet all day long, is always dropping her tennis ball at my feet and will not let us relax in the evenings. She hates the little one, and doesn't handle guests well. She is extremely high strung.

The mutt will probably make a better pet.”

“That's what I told him! He thinks dogs should be "for" something though, and that's why he wants a Brittany...for a hunting dog (since he does so much hunting, NOT!).

Oh well, we can't all be as smart as me! ;-)”

this is common in most purebreds...too much inbreeding...mutts all the way!!!...and if you do want a certain bread that is pure or almost pure bred, there are tons of breed specific shelters

Advantage does not work on ticks. You may be thinking of Advantix, which has a permethrin-based drug added to Advantage. Frontline works well on ticks and so do some of the store-bought permethrin-based tick repellants. Dogs DO get lyme disease, and in some cases it will kill them. If you are finding ticks on your dog you should strongly consider vaccinating them for it. Do not rely on the tick repellants or Frontline to prevent it.

“It was Frontline. I had one dose left over from last year for each dog. Both were vaccinated for lyme back in Feb.”
