The worst of all
OXYGEN

Oxygen is a very toxic gas and an extreme fire hazard. It is fatal in
concentrations of as little as 0.000001 p.p.m. Humans exposed to these oxygen
concentrations die within a few minutes. Symptoms resemble very much those of
cyanide poisoning (blue face, etc.) In higher concentration e.g. about 20%,
the toxic effect is somewhat delayed and it takes about 2.5 billion
inhalations before death takes place. The reason for the delay is the
difference in mechanism of the toxic effect of of oxygen in 20% concentration.
It apparently contributes to a complex process called aging, of which very
little is known, except that it is always fatal.

However, the main disadvantage of the 20% oxygen concentration is the fact
that it is habit forming. The first inhalation (occurring at birth) is
sufficient to make oxygen addiction permanent. After that, any considerable
decrease in the daily oxygen doses results in death with symptoms resembling
those of cyanide poisoning.

Concentrations higher than 20% decrease the above mentioned delay. High
oxygen concentration provokes in prematurely born babies placed in incubators
a condition known as retrolental fibroplasia resulting in blindness. Lung
irritation has been reported on experimental animals exposed for several days
to high oxygen concentrations.

Oxygen is an extreme fire hazard. All the fires that were reported in the
continental U.S. for the period of the past 25 years were found to be due to
the presence of this gas in the atmosphere surrounding the buildings in
question.

Oxygen is especially dangerous because it is odorless, colorless and
tasteless, so that its presence cannot be readily detected until it is too
late.

I was an Oxygen huffer once. Then I switched to dope. Soon I was turning tricks for speedballs.

After that, things got really ugly.

"Yesterday I was in a hospital ward full of girls trying to recover from addictions (yes, addictions)to pot and other drugs. They all started with pot.
Great place”

I’m right there with ya on this one Jo. My nephew is rotting away in state pen as I write this. Along with suffering from terminal stupidity, his career as a drug user which started with pot has ended (hopefully) with his being busted for possession of meth, meth addiction, distribution, forgery, B & E, and he’s got a 14 year old girl knocked up (he’s 19). Of course being the bright 19 year old that he is while he was out between trial and sentencing he got busted for underage drinking and trying to steal beer.

He got 6 months which I think is not enough. He spent most of his teen years in some sort of detention and most of it was due to pot. His mother is a fine upstanding pot smoker too.

Yeah, drugs are really cool and good for families.

It's still nonsense. angii and other drug apologists.....please come over to the hospital where my kid was and have the guts to preach your views. Then again, Im sure that there is one near you doing booming business. Interesting how the "cool" relatives and friends who influenced my kid were there to party but no where to be found when she was sick.

Being a pot smoker is a just slightly more sophisticated way to be a drunk.

Oh no! I won't get invited to any cool TT parties now. My life is over. I'll stay home and watch Lawrence Welk reruns.

Hypocrite? How so? I did the drug and drinking thing, I saw what it can do, I’ve seen family and friends destroy their lives with it. Seems to me the older “hypocrites” here just might have an even better perspective.

Treebeard

OK, JO & Nigal. I'm not trying to offend and I'll try to ask this politely.

People tend to criticize the "cool drug" culture for influencing people down the road of abuse.

Do parents who drink and or smoke cigarettes beat themselves for having alcoholic kids or kids that die of lung cancer?

Who do you blame if the person starts drinking or smoking then takes up harder drugs?

When you first start smoking do you not get a high?

I remember sneaking smokes on occassion from my mom when I was young. What a cool thing that was! Then I went to alcohol. Pot was next. Then I discovered the wonderful high from clove cigarretes!!!! After that it was Hash. I tried downers a couple of times. Didn't understand that at all.

Then some bastard laced our Hash with opium! Soon I went to heroin and speedballs. My mom blamed the Opium.......

LMAO! I kill me! OK, the Heroin & speedballs are a joke.

Still. I grew up surrounded by drug users. Right out of Highschool I lived with Deadheads (the revival years) who loved to dose each others breakfast (LSD in the scrammbled eggs). They did 'shrooms, coke, downers, uppers, they even huffed.

I've been friends with and seen them use every drug, legal & illegal, that there is. Most off them are from my small hometown.

Somehow, I avoided it. I would say 95-99% of them got over it and now lead "respectable" lives.

It's not the drugs. It's the person.

It’s a whole bunch of factors BM. I wasn’t trying to nail it down to one thing and one thing only. But let’s face it, a huge factor is accessibility. I’m not saying you can live a clean life while those around you do drugs. I did it for years. But let’s face it guy, the greatest prevention is environment. A child that grows up in a family where the parents DON’T smoke dope are more likely to not get evolved with drugs. I credit my older brother for keeping me out of the shlt even though I did later smoke on occasion. Had I not had that type of influence and support god only knows where I’d be now.

I know from experience that when a teen finds mom or dad’s stash it’s like a big green flashing light that says, “It’s OK.”.
Nigal

I might agree with some of the stuff you said, Nigal. But I believe the major influencing factors in a kids life is his/her peers.

So how do you stop it since illegal drugs can be found everywhere?

I believe there are two types of kids, basically. Ones who will rebel, and ones who won't. Doesn't matter much what the parent does (to a dgree) kids will make choices based on their personality type.

BM - how old are you? As you get older you're going to be amazed at how many of your parents mannerisms you take on without realizing. As your children grow you will also be amazed at how they take on your mannerisms.

Bottom line, good parenting works. Like everything, there are exceptions but for the most part parents do play a big role.

Why does anyone, aside form treatment for mental illness, want to use chemicals to alter their mood or consciousness? Is it because of some belief that their natural state is deficient? Are they so short sighted that they are thinking only of the moment without regard to the future? Do they really believe the propaganda that they affect no one but themselves? Would they go to the doctor and ask the doctor to give them something to make them stupid? I can not understand it. It has no redeeming value of any kind.

I once rode a ski lift with a guy that asked me if I had ever skied while high on mushrooms. He said that it made you ski better. I told him that he only thought he skied better. How can you perform better when your reactions and judgment are impaired? I have participated in plenty of activities in search of a thrill. But these are activities that require the acquisition of a skill. They are achievements. I like to say “if it were easy anyone could do it.” Use of mood altering chemicals is easy and anyone can do it, no skill, no hard work, no brains required.

It appears to me that anyone that would advocate or justify the use of mood altering chemicals might as well write on their forehead “I am a self-absorbed idiot”.

dayhiker - I'm old enough to know better?

My mom couldn't control me and didn't have much say in what I did. Didn't have anything to do with her skills but with who I was. I was a rebel with a cause and we both survived somehow.

And I'm pretty sure I have no kids.

I was just checking this thread because I realized it could sound like I was saying something different than I meant to. I'm just saying as you get a little older you start to see things differently. That's all.

I think we all have a bit of, old enough to know better, yet still too young to care, in us.

I write that on my ass while I masturbate.

If I'm doing it while "altereed" than I try to write it on my manhood and ass.

That is not as easy as it sounds and takes quite a bit of skill.
