Two Mauled by Black Bear
I'm surpised this hasn't been posted, yet.

News this morning reports that two campers were maualed by a black bear in Rocky Mountain National Park. The two people were able to chase off the bear after being mauled and bitten by the bear. First time in 30 years.

Sad, especially for the likely future of the bear. Wonder what the two were doing to make the bear so aggressive.

Odessa Gorge area of the park
NEWS

Black bear mauls two campers in Rocky Mountain National Park
A black bear mauled two campers over the weekend, leaving them with torn scalps and forcing rangers to shut down a number of backcountry camping sites. Patrick Finan, 22, of Boulder and Tim Schuett, 23, of Glen Ellyn, Ill., were attacked as they slept in separate tents early Sunday, officials said Monday. Finan was bitten in the forehead and scalp before the bear let go, park spokesman Kyle Patterson said. Schuett, who was awakened by the screams of his colleague, was scratched on the head. The bear walked off when he yelled. Park rangers shut down backcountry camping sites in the Odessa Gorge area of the park and were trying to locate the bear. “This is a serious incident,” chief ranger Joe Evans said. “All proper food storage was used in this campsite and the bear still acted aggressively.” The last fatality in the park from a black bear attack was in 1971.

Well, it's good to know that at least the campers who were attacked were doing all the right things.

I usually don't worry about the black bear even when hiking the Smokies and Cherokee Nat'l forest. I even hiked the Little River trail just after that school teacher was killed by bears a few years ago. The funny thing was the day before my hike my wife and I were in Gatlinburg shopping in a candy store. She suggested that I try one of those little straws with honey inside. I replied "What are you trying to do, get me eaten by a bear?" The lady at the store didn't think it was funny tho. I wound up hiking with a guy from Indiana and we hiked and fished 4 miles up the river.

The only times I've seen bears in the backcountry they're doing full tilt boogie away from me. THen again, HPM, his bro and I were driving through Cherokee late one night and nearly hit the biggest lardbutt bear I've ever seen.
