My conclusion is......
The thread about something generated 30 posts.

The thread about nothing generated 65 posts.

I conclude that TrailTalkers prefer discussions about nothing two to one over discussions about something

I could have told you that without any research.

Well, according to Law 101, you always have to remember, "If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, you have to baffle them with bull#&%!$.

JAYsus... When I saw this thread, my initial thought was: "I wonder what the topic of UpUrs' thesis might be... ?" LOL

I want the record to reflect that I am NOT the troll know as UpUrs!

Gee thanks, tilt. Now I will live under a cloud of scandal.

ICIS99 Doctoral Consortium Theme Song

(to the tune of "Wonderful World" by Sam Cooke, Herb Alpert and Lou Adler)

Don't know much about theory
Don't know much ontology
Have no clue about my methods book
Don't remember the stats that I took
But I'm here at the consortium
So I must not be too awful dumb
I can't wait to defend and be done

My committee is a virtual team
Suffering commitment escalation schemes
Don't know much 'bout systems memory
And what the heck is specifity?
But I'm here at the consortium
So I must not be too awful dumb
I can't wait to defend and be done

Software development has all been outsourced
Media richness is important of course
What's collaborative filtering?
Telecommuting must be my thing
But I'm here at the consortium
So I must not be too awful dumb
I can't wait to defend and be done

Now, I don't claim to be an A student
But I'm tryin' to be
For maybe by being an A student someday
I can finish my Ph.D.

Many schools are knocking on my door
Good thing 'cause I'm mighty poor
Don' know when I' be getting done
It's too long since this all has begun
But I'm here at the consortium
So I must not be too awful dumb
I can't wait to defend and be done

Oh ICIS... ICIS... (Ph.D.)
I need to publish (Please... oh... please...)

But I'm here at the consortium
So I must not be too awful dumb
I can't wait to defend and be done

'Debian Does Dallas'?

Chili - define, in your terms, what is something and what is nothing. Maybe your definitions are flawed, which may have created the vast disparity.

or.....

gimme the details, it would be nice to have a debate on the criterion.

Are we statistics then? Cause I want to add this to my resume for special skills.

Professor Buddha Bear.......
The only thing I know about the difference between something and nothing is what I learned watching David Letterman on the skits where he and Paul play the game..."Is this something, or is this nothing?"

So, therefore, it could be that something and nothing are coexistent based upon the individual who tries to define the substance of something,,,or perhaps nothing.

Having said that, I still think that discussing nothing seems to preferred here. But if you talk about nothing long enough, you actually are talking about something. But long discussions about something cannot necessarily lead to a conclusion that you are really discussing nothing.

Thus, nothing is something.

Clear now?

Geo, that further emphasizes my point that nothing can be something. Thanks for the example.

I was almost 100% certain that Chili's research was going to be on boobs. I assumed he'd prolly conduct most of it at Hooters. LOL!

Again demonstrating Chili's contention (a lawyer needing a journalist to make a point? Hang your head, Chili!).

Actually, I did some research at the Orlando Hooter's this week. I found the visual talent to be almost as good as the Huntsville Hooters, leading me to an early conclusion that the Orlando Hooters would score a 9 as opposed to the Huntsville Hooters score of 9.5. But I had to deduct a point for lack of personality, leaving the Orlando Hooters only slightly ahead of the Memphis Hooters, which scores 7.75.

Gee, newgirl, am I that predictable?

Well, geobeet, while I did not necessarily need you to demonstrate the point, I certainly did appreciate your timely intervention.

As a good journalist, you are certainly timely in uncovering breaking news.
