Scattered Thunderstorms....
in the afternoons is the forecast for the Sierras this weekend. Myself, a friend from work, and his kids are heading to Emigrant Lake this weekend for a backpack trip, his kids first ever bp trip. I am reasonably sure that the thunder storms will just be the classic afternoon clouds with a possibility of rain and lightning. I would go myself even with the weather, but my question is if you were 9 years old, would a t-storm in the afternoon discourage you from wanting to go?

It all depends on YOU!!!.
I personally love to be on top of a mountain during a thunder storm...I get nekkid and dance all around the place yellin and screamin at the sky. If you all do that, then, I'm sure that the lil ones will either have a blast or be frightened out of thier wits...either way, have fun

I like watching thunderstorms but I prefer not being the highest point in the area. (or out in a canoe)

As long as they're not surprised
They'll be OK. Just tell them what to expect..."OK guys, let's all make sure we have our rain-gear, because we know it's going to rain." "Here's what we do when this happens"...

One of the best trips when my scouts was younger was in the Sierra during a very nasty t'storm...they had never seen lightening like that, or heard the thunder echo from valley to valley, it can be really cool. A lot of the boys still talk about that trip, I think they were 11 at the time, but it was al new experience for them.

T-storms wouldn't bother me a bit at the age of 9. Hopefully you guys can get some shelter up but it would still be great time. Some of best memories are of summer storms in Oklahoma/Texas.

Updated Forecast
indicates sunny with no clouds. Nothing to worry about now as far as the weather is concerned. This is a good thing.

depends on where you're talking about in the Sierra Nevada Tahoe.

I came out at Robinson Ck (Twin Lakes) on Friday, the T-Storms started at about 1:30 pm and lasted until I got out at 4:30, longer in the high country. They weren't that intense though.

Rockman, I agree, there's nothin' like a Texas t-storm, difference is the rain temp and air temp in Texas makes the rain feel good, in the mountains the temps generally drop to the point where you want some shelter.

Our Scout troop has the policy of going out even in bad weather (which, admittedly, is not that often here). The only thing that stops us is closed roads and flash flood warnings. Funny, those "bad weather" outings are the ones we seem to remember and talk about a lot.

they said we were to have scattered showers in the Whites this last weekend. It was more like a bath!

I was backpacking up near Sonora Pass this weekend and we saw a thunderstorm or two. Nothing like last summer in Montana though. Fortunately it always cleared enough for dinner cooking and clean-up. I love lying in my tent listening to the rain. I suspect any 9-year-old worth his or her salt would love a thunderstorm in the wilderness.

Storms were pretty bad here yesterday afternoon. Some areas got over 5" of rain in 30 minutes. During the height of the storm we got something like 2000 lightning strikes every 15 minutes. Unfortunately one of those struck and killed a local teen.

Round 2 is supposed to hit today.
