I'm new to windows xp and it is still a little confusing for me. I have too many programs loading up at startup and with windows 98 I used msconfig to arrange my startup programs. Msconfig is different on windows xp and I can't seem to get rid of all these programs! I have 30 programs running right now and its driving me nuts and slowing my computer down!

binks try this:

go to start, click run, type msconfig, hit the tab startup as usual in msconfig, uncheck what u dont want to boot up, hit ok, then reboot comp. then if continues to boot up...go to start, all programs, then startup folder...delete everything there
and if it doesnt work, go to the options menu of the programs and uncheck boot up with windows

Try this brandon:

go to run and type in services.msc

there you will find a list of all the programs that are loading up and a description of all of them. from that screen you can disable the unnecessary programs.

I was able to disable a few of them, but I still don't understand what alot of the programs are for. I'm afraid to disable something that I might need.

There is an awesome program I downloadd of tech tv that was dealing with this exact issue ITs called winnertweak. I downloaded it and it helpedme manage everything in mine without any problems. It works as a control panel for everything in windows xp!!! Go to www.thescreensavers.com to get it. It was on screen savers like last week. It's awesome!!

oh yeah . When you get to www.thescreensavers.com search for winnertweak (should still be on the front page somewhere) and download from them.

You tell it how you want your start up to be set and it changes your settings for you .

AH a link....

I have a clipping from James Coates' column on my desk at work that deals with this. There are a few sites that attempt to list what everything does so you don't disable anything important and his column mentioned a good one. I'll look for it tomorrow.

Search on Google for Startup CPL, this prog is great, show all programs set to run on boot. Very slick.

Wouldn't you know it? That column seems to have disappeared. If it surfaces, I'll let you know.

Here's the list!

From Jim's column:

Q You always seem to know what those Windows XP start-up items are for, like SynTPLpr, etc. Where can I get a ``dictionary'' so I can get at least an idea of which ones to try to deactivate?

A In recent months I have been delighted at www.reger24.de, the Web offerings of German Windows guru Alexander Reger. His site moves between English and German with superb coverage of the vast bulk of these vexing start-up items called processes. They are the dirty little secrets behind Windows XP that tend to drive users to distraction as soon as they discover how to click on Start and Run and then type in the command msconfig.

This is the XP System Configuration Utility, which displays the identity of each and every bit of software running in the background and permits one to click a check box to switch any of them on or off. These are snippets of code that range from printer drivers to movie players that get loaded into memory in ever-increasing numbers as more and more software is added to a computer.
