“UNITED NATIONS (CNN) -- The United States vetoed a U.N. resolution Tuesday that would have demanded Israel halt threats to expel Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat.

Eleven of the 15 Security Council members voted for the resolution, and three members -- Britain, Bulgaria and Germany -- abstained. The U.S. veto killed the resolution.

In the Middle East, chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat said: "This is a sad day for the United Nations. I hope the U.S. veto will not be interpreted by Israel as a license to kill Yasser Arafat."

The Israeli security Cabinet decided in principle last week to remove Arafat, calling him an obstacle to peace, but it provided no specifics about possible action.

International criticism escalated Sunday following Israeli Vice Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's remark that killing Arafat was an option. Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom backtracked Monday, saying that was not official policy.

The Arab League -- which proposed the U.N. resolution through Security Council member Syria -- called Israel's actions the equivalent of a declaration of war on Middle East peace.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's government blames Arafat for not stopping terrorist attacks that have killed dozens of Israelis in recent weeks. Arafat remains confined to his compound in the West Bank city of Ramallah, surrounded by supporters.

Nasser al-Kidwa, chief of the Palestinian observer mission at the United Nations, warned that "serious consequences may follow the use of this veto, and the United states will bear the consequences for that," The Associated Press reported.

“WASHINGTON (AP) -- The American Civil Liberties Union asked the federal courts Tuesday to prevent the U.S. Secret Service from keeping anti-Bush protesters far away from presidential appearances while allowing supporters to display their messages up close.

The civil liberties group filed the lawsuit in federal court in Pennsylvania on behalf of four advocacy organizations that claimed that the Secret Service forced them into protest zones or other areas where they could not be seen by President Bush or Vice President Dick Cheney or be noticed by the media covering their visits.

"The pattern we found was at presidential and vice presidential appearances, protesters were restricted to areas where they were out of sight, out of earshot and often out of mind," said Witold J. Walczak, legal director for the ACLU's Greater Pittsburgh chapter.

"Protecting our nation's leaders from harm is important. Protecting our nation's leaders from dissent is unconstitutional."

Said Secret Service spokesman John Gill: "The Secret Service does not comment on pending litigation. However, we have a long-standing policy of recognizing the constitutionally-protected right of the public to demonstrate and voice their views to their elected officials."


The ACLU complaint lists several incidents where protesters were forced to assemble blocks away from where the president or vice president was speaking, while supporters of the administration's policy could hold their signs up in front of the building. They cited examples across the country, including Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Columbia, South Carolina; Phoenix, Arizona; Stockton, California; and St. Louis, Missouri.

The plaintiffs are the National Organization for Women; United for Peace and Justice, an anti-war group; ACORN, an advocacy organization for low and moderate-income families; and USAction, an advocacy group that supports universal health care and better public education and opposes the Iraq war and Bush's tax cuts.

With the House this week hashing out the size of President Bush's proposed tax cut, an interesting survey crossed my computer screen regarding how young people feel about the government sticking its hands ever deeper into our pockets.

Seems most young Americans, that is, kids ages 13 to 18, think taxes are too high, according to a survey conducted by Junior Achievement Inc.

Overall, 71 percent surveyed said the tax burden is too much. And the younger the respondents, the more likely they were to say taxes are bloated.

Also, more girls (74 percent) than guys (68 percent) say government is too grabby with our paychecks.

Have you ever considered that some of the backpackers on this site frequent those threads? Or are backpackers mindless robots programmed with only one interest? I see no problem with political threads. I participate in them. Having said that, I don't think Alaska is interested in participating in challenging debates, but rather demonstrations of his hatred of America.”

i respond to the constant birrage of bush jihadism, often alone in the wilderness, because both sides should be heard. i have been interested in politics for some time. i dont really talk about it much in person.....at all really.

I disagree with Alaska's thead title, but I do agree with his c/p news report. Should he have created a link and then discussed it in his own words, probably. Alaska, thank you for sharing the news report that you found. Without you, I would have never known about it. Does anyone here seriously believe that banning peaceful protesters who are ligitimatley questioning our government's actions is the right thing to do? That's the great thing about this country, everyone has the right to say what they believe in and if someone want's to hinder that then this country is starting to rot right down to it's core. If this lawsuit does turn out to be true than I think the people responsible should be punished.

Alaska, if you seriously think this country sucks, then you should be the one checking out real estate in Somalia. If you actually love this country but disagree with some of it's politics and/or politicians, then let your statesmen know that you won't be voting for him the next time around and convince other people to do the same.

Like I said before, you should really research something before you make statements about it. The state of Nevada (that's including Las Vegas, Boulder City, etc) recieves ZERO energy from Hoover Dam. You should come to Vegas sometime and tour the dam, there's a lot to learn about the history of the southwest. Here it is in a nutshell:
When they decided to build a dam in Southern Nevada, the state of Arizona and the state of California put up most the money and secured all the rights to the electricity. When the dam was being built, Las Vegas wasn't even a bump in the road. Why would power be alocated for a city that didn't even exist. Boulder City became a city for the construction of the dam and they didn't even get any electricity out of the deal.

The Hoover Dam's main purpose isn't to create electricity. It's main purpose is as a flood control device. The generation of electricity was built into the dam to help offset the cost of the dam. The BLM who regulates the flow of water through the dam could care less how much power is generated on a daily basis, their main concern is to keep the flow of the Colorado river below the dam at a steady, environmentally friendly level.”
