Early on, our progenitors embraced the truth that all those who desire to live forthrightly, steadfastly, and uncompromisingly would undoubtedly be forced to suffer the slings and arrows of discontent. The heroes of the past have always been those who actually sacrificed their lives, fortunes, and reputations for the sake of truth." --George Grant "I saw in my dream that he made haste ... looking very narrowly before him as he went, he espied two lions in the way.... Then he was afraid ... for he thought nothing but death was before him. But the porter at the lodge, whose name is Watchful, perceiving ... he would go back, cried: 'Is thy strength so small? Fear not the lions, for they are chained, and are placed there for trial of faith, and for discovery of those that had none. Keep in the midst of the path, and no hurt shall come unto thee'." --John Bunyan, Pilgrim's Progress” 11:04:16 PM 9/09/03 “perfect! you're on a roll with butter, baby. you have ASSurred yourself a place in my cabinet.” 11:06:44 PM 9/09/03 “UNITED NATIONS (CNN) -- The United States vetoed a U.N. resolution Tuesday that would have demanded Israel halt threats to expel Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat. Eleven of the 15 Security Council members voted for the resolution, and three members -- Britain, Bulgaria and Germany -- abstained. The U.S. veto killed the resolution. In the Middle East, chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat said: "This is a sad day for the United Nations. I hope the U.S. veto will not be interpreted by Israel as a license to kill Yasser Arafat." The Israeli security Cabinet decided in principle last week to remove Arafat, calling him an obstacle to peace, but it provided no specifics about possible action. International criticism escalated Sunday following Israeli Vice Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's remark that killing Arafat was an option. Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom backtracked Monday, saying that was not official policy. The Arab League -- which proposed the U.N. resolution through Security Council member Syria -- called Israel's actions the equivalent of a declaration of war on Middle East peace. Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's government blames Arafat for not stopping terrorist attacks that have killed dozens of Israelis in recent weeks. Arafat remains confined to his compound in the West Bank city of Ramallah, surrounded by supporters. Nasser al-Kidwa, chief of the Palestinian observer mission at the United Nations, warned that "serious consequences may follow the use of this veto, and the United states will bear the consequences for that," The Associated Press reported. USA...always the one out of line.” 10:14:08 PM 9/16/03 USA SUCKS because Bush Sucks “WASHINGTON (AP) -- The American Civil Liberties Union asked the federal courts Tuesday to prevent the U.S. Secret Service from keeping anti-Bush protesters far away from presidential appearances while allowing supporters to display their messages up close. The civil liberties group filed the lawsuit in federal court in Pennsylvania on behalf of four advocacy organizations that claimed that the Secret Service forced them into protest zones or other areas where they could not be seen by President Bush or Vice President Dick Cheney or be noticed by the media covering their visits. "The pattern we found was at presidential and vice presidential appearances, protesters were restricted to areas where they were out of sight, out of earshot and often out of mind," said Witold J. Walczak, legal director for the ACLU's Greater Pittsburgh chapter. "Protecting our nation's leaders from harm is important. Protecting our nation's leaders from dissent is unconstitutional." Said Secret Service spokesman John Gill: "The Secret Service does not comment on pending litigation. However, we have a long-standing policy of recognizing the constitutionally-protected right of the public to demonstrate and voice their views to their elected officials." The ACLU complaint lists several incidents where protesters were forced to assemble blocks away from where the president or vice president was speaking, while supporters of the administration's policy could hold their signs up in front of the building. They cited examples across the country, including Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Columbia, South Carolina; Phoenix, Arizona; Stockton, California; and St. Louis, Missouri. The plaintiffs are the National Organization for Women; United for Peace and Justice, an anti-war group; ACORN, an advocacy organization for low and moderate-income families; and USAction, an advocacy group that supports universal health care and better public education and opposes the Iraq war and Bush's tax cuts. Bush is scum.” 7:54:42 PM 9/23/03 Matt “Can you get this idiot off the board? Please!!!!! If he wants to criticize the COUNTRY let him do it on some other website. If I wanted to see USA SUCKS on my computer I would go to some terrorist website!!!” 8:13:02 PM 9/23/03 agreed!!! “thanks matt.” 8:32:58 PM 9/23/03 “The irony of the content of Spock's post followed by those is pretty rich.” 9:06:14 PM 9/23/03 agreed. “but is Alaska's speech protected by the Trail Talk Constitution?” 9:08:54 PM 9/23/03 Ban truth “Hell yes, BAN THE TRUTH. Ban taxes. We don't want to pay taxes for this crappy country.” 9:12:43 PM 9/23/03 “Teens think taxes are way too high Bucks County Courier Times With the House this week hashing out the size of President Bush's proposed tax cut, an interesting survey crossed my computer screen regarding how young people feel about the government sticking its hands ever deeper into our pockets. Seems most young Americans, that is, kids ages 13 to 18, think taxes are too high, according to a survey conducted by Junior Achievement Inc. Overall, 71 percent surveyed said the tax burden is too much. And the younger the respondents, the more likely they were to say taxes are bloated. Also, more girls (74 percent) than guys (68 percent) say government is too grabby with our paychecks. .............................. "That's insane," said Heather DePerro of Bristol Township. "Ridiculous," said Jennifer Clark of Middletown. "That's close to half. It seems like a crime," said Joe Pettinati of Fairless Hills. "I feel resentment. I don't feel it's justified," said Ryan McKeown of Levittown. "If they're going to take that much, I should be able to say where it goes," said Tom Long of Middletown. Oh, to be young and full of common sense again. I bet if I surveyed teenagers anywhere in the United States they'd react the same. After all, they probably have this crazy notion that it's their money to begin with, right? ....................... As for the young ones who think taxes are too high, I have the perfect name for them: Future Republicans. http://www.phillyburbs.com/pb-dyn/news/219-05072003-85285.html Todays kids are unpatriotic. Unwilling to pay taxes to live in their own country. You people who don't like to pay taxes should move to Somalia. You'll like it there. I don't mind paying taxes. All you worthless republicans, move to Somalia. Very low taxes there, I hear.” 9:25:44 PM 9/23/03 “Thats AWESOME news. More Young Repub's. Exxxxxxxxceeelllent! Smithers, was that buffoon...” 9:37:46 PM 9/23/03 “DUH!” 9:42:41 PM 9/23/03 “This is what's wrong with this country, republicans who think like teenagers, and adults who watch cartoons.” 9:49:33 PM 9/23/03 Kick the baby!!! “Cartman, you're such a fatass” 10:47:26 PM 9/23/03 “I didn't even read his post and don't care to. I don't even want to see his idiotic threads. He is a menace! Why can't we put all political threads under their own icon and then allow people to ignore that particular icon if they choose to do so. I know I'm not the only one sick of seeing half the threads be about politics. I don't know how easy that would be to do, but I know the backpackers on the site would appreciate it.” 11:36:37 PM 9/23/03 “"USA SUCKS because Bush Sucks" thats the stupidest damn thing ive ever heard.” 11:37:09 PM 9/23/03 “don't know how easy that would be to do, but I know the backpackers on the site would appreciate it." jgeils 11:36:37 PM 09/23/03 Have you ever considered that some of the backpackers on this site frequent those threads? Or are backpackers mindless robots programmed with only one interest? I see no problem with political threads. I participate in them. Having said that, I don't think Alaska is interested in participating in challenging debates, but rather demonstrations of his hatred of America.” 11:46:59 PM 9/23/03 “jgeils, you are correct. there are several new political posts every day. i have only started one(but i have finished many....HEH HEH!). i respond to the constant birrage of bush jihadism, often alone in the wilderness, because both sides should be heard. i have been interested in politics for some time. i dont really talk about it much in person.....at all really. what i'm tryin to say is i agree there are way too many political threads, and 98% of them are started by "the TT left" and ripping GW bush. my underlying point is that libs only have negativity to offer, only criticism, only bitterness, despair, and fear. class warfare and racial devision. ps....these thread sure are shorter when alaska's on ignore, lmao! he's the only that's made my list, so far......” 11:49:22 PM 9/23/03 Ladies and Gentlemen “Alaska is a tool, we all agree, and he is the main problem of the democratic party. I view him as the polar of the religious right. When people like him speak/post, it's natural for us to turn the other way, because he is the Rush Limbuagh of the democrats. However, please note something he quoted in his post (I know most of you didn't read it, just like I normally wouldn't.) - "Protecting our nation's leaders from harm is important. Protecting our nation's leaders from dissent is unconstitutional." That, my friends, is truth. Unfortunately the message is lost in the messanger.” 12:13:48 AM 9/24/03 stratdewd “In resonse to your last post. Explain me.” 12:15:14 AM 9/24/03 “The problem with TT is morons who associate me with the domocratic party. This is what makes you people morons! BB, you are the moron. I call it as I see it. Just because I see Bush and Republicans as scum, does not make me a democrat, and certainly not any more than calling Bill Clinton a liar makes me a republican. This is why USA sucks...stupid people like BB.... and jgeils -I don't even want to see his idiotic threads. He is a menace! Riiiiight, but you read my threads anyway.” 12:31:13 AM 9/24/03 “BB, i'm not really sure what you mean, but i will respond to something you said. i once asked my nephew if he had ever listened to kimbaugh. he said ...no, i wont' listen to him, because my mom told he's "religious right". well, i told him that limbaugh doesnt ta” 12:36:45 AM 9/24/03 “BB, i'm not really sure what you mean, but i will respond to something you said. i once asked my nephew if he had ever listened to kimbaugh. he said ...no, i wont' listen to him, because my mom told he's "religious right". well, i told him that limbaugh doesnt ta” 12:36:46 AM 9/24/03 “oops! SORRY, my A.D.D kicked in.....what were we talking aboit again?” 12:37:56 AM 9/24/03 . . . but Alaska blows! “Lets let a paraphrased Stanley Kubrick line have the last word: "USA may suck, but Alaska blows" ( Full Metal Jacket )” 12:38:26 AM 9/24/03 “JIHAD BUSH!” 12:45:44 AM 9/24/03 “Any idiot can C/P. And lord knows this site is full of them. Show some intelligence and learn to paraphrase. This site isn't set up to read lengthy c/p. Learn to keep it short and sweet and to the point. Is that too much to ask?” 7:19:37 AM 9/24/03 “I didn't even read his post and don't care to. I don't even want to see his idiotic threads. He is a menace! Why can't we put all political threads under their own icon and then allow people to ignore that particular icon if they choose to do so. I know I'm not the only one sick of seeing half the threads be about politics. I don't know how easy that would be to do, but I know the backpackers on the site would appreciate it." jgeils 11:36:37 PM Oh, "USA SUCKS" isn't clearly political to you? Matt made the ignore feature for a reason..... And try not to decide what everyone else here should be reading. The specific thing most of us enjoy about TT is the variety of issues covered by the threads.” 7:35:13 AM 9/24/03 “I'm not saying we shouldn't have political threads, but why can't they have their own category and have an ignore feature. I visit some sport sites that have an "all politics" sections and that way you don't have to even see the threads. The titles of some of these threads are insulting enough.” 8:40:22 AM 9/24/03 “There is another backpacking forum set up that way. The equivalent of the ‘chatter’ category has the most post by far. Could it be that backpackers like to discuss a variety of topics? Ol’ Spock is just trying to rile you up. Why on Earth do y’all indulge him? Have you noticed that when someone posts to this thread, the offensive title goes to the top of the list? MY EYES! MY EYES!” 9:08:46 AM 9/24/03 “Any idiot can C/P. And lord knows this site is full of them. Show some intelligence and learn to paraphrase Never were truer words posted on TT. Well said, Briar.” 9:21:50 AM 9/24/03 “I agree with Buddha here. I once suspected Alaska of deliberately trying to parody skeptics of Bush policy to make Bush look good. I decided I was wrong in that suspicion, but he does seem interested in having anything he says taken seriously - just interested in watching people react. Sure his says things that make sense some times... even a broken watch is right twice a day.” 9:24:30 AM 9/24/03 “[wagging finger] Tisk tisk tisk! Free speech! Free speech! Nothing's taboo. Nothing's shocking. Anything goes here at TT.” 10:24:52 AM 9/24/03 IMMIGRATION “I THINK SOME SPECIMENS NEED TO IMMIGRATE TO SOME OTHER COUNTRY AND TO SORT OF ROUND OUT THEIR EXPERIENCE.HELP THE TRODDEN , VOWS OF POVERTY AND THE OTHER .” 11:43:48 AM 9/24/03 “It's rare when I jump on a political thread and post, but I wanted there to be at least one intelligent, non political party driven post on this thread. I disagree with Alaska's thead title, but I do agree with his c/p news report. Should he have created a link and then discussed it in his own words, probably. Mutt and Violin have a point but on the other hand if people just paraphrased, everyone would jump on them for distorting the truth and spewing bi-partisan rhetoric. Alaska, thank you for sharing the news report that you found. Without you, I would have never known about it. Does anyone here seriously believe that banning peaceful protesters who are ligitimatley questioning our government's actions is the right thing to do? That's the great thing about this country, everyone has the right to say what they believe in and if someone want's to hinder that then this country is starting to rot right down to it's core. If this lawsuit does turn out to be true than I think the people responsible should be punished. Alaska, if you seriously think this country sucks, then you should be the one checking out real estate in Somalia. If you actually love this country but disagree with some of it's politics and/or politicians, then let your statesmen know that you won't be voting for him the next time around and convince other people to do the same. Don't we need to hold the people who we voted into office responsible for EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THIER ACTIONS? I know when I hire someone I hold them acountabale for thier actions, why should the government work any different. The political threads could be a great asset to this website if people posting on them would intelligently discuss the issues brought up and not resort to petty name calling and broad generalizations.” 12:11:03 PM 9/24/03 “Life pretty good for you, reptiles, living there in Nevada? Hmmm, what drives the economy in your state, could it be gambling and prostitution? Bet you're proud of that... Living in America. Feels good.” 10:12:38 PM 9/24/03 political debate on TT “Actually I do not think this is a good place to debate politics of any sort. You are not the only one reptiles but most of us are not interested. There surely are other forums you would perhaps be more comfortable with. Unless you have comments about a trail or piece of equipment or grub of course.” 1:21:36 PM 9/25/03 “Alaska, actually prostitution is illegal where I live and casinos on the strip only make about 30% of their profit from gambling. They make their money from shops, shows, food, and hotel rooms. I make my money from providing people a safe place to live, which I am very proud of. Life pretty good for you, Alaska, living there in Alaska? Hmmm, what drives the economy in your state, could it be raping mother earth for minerals, ores, and oil? Bet you're pretty proud of that. mcrunt, who else do you speak for? Everyone else on this site has their own voice which they are free to use. I don't think they want you speaking for them. This site is a virtual campfire, where people discuss what's on their minds. We discuss gear, trails, trips, grub, and current events, just like people would discuss around a real campfire. That's why Matt put in the section filters, so those who only want to discuss gear can single out the gear threads.” 5:26:47 PM 9/25/03 “Don't live in Alaska, never said I did. But you seem to be proud of living in the desert and sucking the life out of the Colorado River.” 7:58:47 PM 9/25/03 ok “Did I say I was looking for a new stove ?” 11:37:38 AM 9/26/03 “Alaska, I only assumed that you lived in Alaska becuase you aren't willing to share your information with other people on this site. I would also suggest that you do more research on topics before you make incorrect statements. 90% of the water that goes into the sewer system of Las Vegas comes back as tap water in Las Vegas. Las Vegas also utilizies undergound water sources to suppliment the water demands for the city. Our actual draw from the Colorado is a drop in the bucket compared to Arizona and California.” 2:33:20 PM 9/26/03 “Don't confuse him with facts, reptiles.” 2:34:11 PM 9/26/03 “I rafted the Colorado once. Not the whole thing, of course, but it seemed to have a lot of life in it where I was...” 2:41:12 PM 9/26/03 “It's the electricity. Ever heard of the Hoover/Boulder dam. Just to power all those pretty lights in Las Vegas so wealthy Americans can stay up all night to gamble way their money, and then go home and complain that taxes are too high.” 3:37:52 PM 9/26/03 “"It's the electricity. Ever heard of the Hoover/Boulder dam. Just to power all those pretty lights in Las Vegas so wealthy Americans can stay up all night to gamble way their money, and then go home and complain that taxes are too high." Alaska 03:37:52 PM 09/26/03 And that's EXACTLY why the USA RULES!” 3:40:27 PM 9/26/03 “No, that's exactly why the USA deserves to be destroyed.” 3:45:42 PM 9/26/03 “Alaska, Like I said before, you should really research something before you make statements about it. The state of Nevada (that's including Las Vegas, Boulder City, etc) recieves ZERO energy from Hoover Dam. You should come to Vegas sometime and tour the dam, there's a lot to learn about the history of the southwest. Here it is in a nutshell: When they decided to build a dam in Southern Nevada, the state of Arizona and the state of California put up most the money and secured all the rights to the electricity. When the dam was being built, Las Vegas wasn't even a bump in the road. Why would power be alocated for a city that didn't even exist. Boulder City became a city for the construction of the dam and they didn't even get any electricity out of the deal. The Hoover Dam's main purpose isn't to create electricity. It's main purpose is as a flood control device. The generation of electricity was built into the dam to help offset the cost of the dam. The BLM who regulates the flow of water through the dam could care less how much power is generated on a daily basis, their main concern is to keep the flow of the Colorado river below the dam at a steady, environmentally friendly level.” 3:59:56 PM 9/26/03 “So where does Las Vegas get it's electicity? From the coal fired plant that pollutes the Grand Canyon?” 4:23:23 PM 9/26/03 “Where do you get your electricity Alaska? Don't tell me that computer's running off of solar power....” 4:27:31 PM 9/26/03 “Ultimately, in one way or another, everything gets its energy from solar power.” 4:44:08 PM 9/26/03 Jump to Page << prev
