interesting article in the paper today
it was about geocashing in state parks in arkansas.....

it was a good article. started out talking to a park ranger and his becomming aware of the geocashing craze last year and how they have dealt with it since.

they were at first really worried about geocashing and their first reaction was to outlaw it....or at least heavily regulate it. then he started reading some of the log books and realized that the kind of people who do it are people who really love and respect the outdoors. they also realized that it brings people, hence revenue into the state and parks systems. their main concerns were that cool places would be torn up by geocashers hiding their boxes, and new trails getting cut , just to go to a geocash.

they have decided that it's going to be allowed for now....but there are some regs. it must be a state approved box that is leaft. the box is just an old metal ammo box, painted silver, with a sticker on it with the state park symbol....denoting it as a state approved box. also, the cashe must me logged to the park and the location approved by the park admistrators. you can't dig or disturb anything to hide the box.

also, an important note is that the interior dept does not allow geocashing....meaning that it's NOT LEGAL in the buffalo river park system. all state parks are cool though.

there's even several park rangers who are into it.....

I love GEOCACHING. However, not all the people who do it are outdoor people. Many are just computer nerds who follow an error on a GPS and never look up or around to see nature! On another note, many geocachers promote "cache in, trash out" meaning that when caching they take trash bags and collect garbage on the trails and bring it out.

Strat... got a link for that story? Someone needs to tell Minnesota state parks to lighten up. A friend and I hiked to a "big spring" area today. It's really cool, both figuratively and literally. Water comes out of a spring from an underground cave system.

There WAS a geocache somewhere up in there. Gone now. Taken by park officials once it was decided geocaching didn't fit in the whole overall scheme of things.

(Ironically, horses do. It's a big horsey park. ahhhh... let's up that horse debate again!! lol)
