Whole House FansView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 30 of 30 messages posted.
Does anyone else have one? “I just bought one and it's fantastic! My energy bill dropped a ton this past month even though it's been the hotest month so far. When I run it at night, then turn it off about 7am and shut the windows and doors, I usually don't have to turn on the AC until late in the afternoon - and only for an hour or two.” 1:28:49 PM 7/21/03 “No, Sierra, but I am interested. Can you give me a brand name and maybe a little description...” 1:29:44 PM 7/21/03 “Your talking about a fan you put up in your attic, right?” 1:31:54 PM 7/21/03 “The whole house fan business in Memphis is pretty slow. It just gives you a choice. stay awake in a pool of sweat.....or stay awake in a pool of sweat with a fan motor humming in the background.” 1:32:09 PM 7/21/03 “Thus, the advent of the "sleeping porch" in the deep South...” 1:34:01 PM 7/21/03 “We put one in our house when we moved in 7 years ago. It has a rheostat on it to adjust the speed. It's on whenever it’s cooler outside than in. We rarely use our AC.” 1:34:24 PM 7/21/03 “When I first saw this thread, I thought it read, "Whore House Fan."” 1:35:09 PM 7/21/03 Here treebeard: 1:40:56 PM 7/21/03 “This is what I thought you guys were talkng about. It is the greatest thing since sliced bread. You can buy the fan and louver system at any Menard's, Home Depot, or Lowe's. I think they run like $150, but I could be mistaken. Unit should be installed in a hallway in center of house, if possible. Make sure you get a model that has 2 speeds.” 1:44:11 PM 7/21/03 “I've wanted one for years. Almost every night during spring, summer, and fall, the temp outside is below 70, yet we are running the A/C to cool the inside down 74 or so. I hate paying to make cool air when there is plenty of it outside for free. Just need to pull it into the house. Maybe next spring.” 1:44:44 PM 7/21/03 “Very easy to install! You will save the cost of the unit in one season.” 1:48:40 PM 7/21/03 “In the south, the problem is there is no cool air to come in.” 1:52:09 PM 7/21/03 “I'm sorry, but that's hardly "the" problem with the south.” 1:53:58 PM 7/21/03 What about chili's comment? “Chili talks about the down-side--the noise of the fan. The idea sounds good, but what about the noise?” 1:54:53 PM 7/21/03 “I don't mind the noise. We got a 36" one so it moves a lot of air at the lowest speed.” 1:57:00 PM 7/21/03 “Ours is more of a "whoosh" than a hum.” 1:57:59 PM 7/21/03 “Mine squeeks a little bit after it starts up but after about 5 minutes, it just sounds like the vent over your stove. Just not as loud.” 2:02:17 PM 7/21/03 “Violin, I said "in" not "with". But don't go slamming the south, mister, or we will send bubba and 5 of his friends up there to throw empty beer cans in your yard.” 2:02:32 PM 7/21/03 “I'll have Vito and Joey meet Bubba at the state line.” 2:09:05 PM 7/21/03 “Wasn’t sure if this was about some new dehydrated food company or a band with a stupid name.” 2:09:30 PM 7/21/03 “the new fans aren't that noisey. Mine's only a little bit louder than my AC...if you can believe that. all the other questions for me seem to have been answered by everyone else...thanks! :-)” 3:20:06 PM 7/21/03 “I turn mine on when it gets below 78 or 79 degrees outside. That's usually around 12:30pm this time of year, but spring..parts of the summer...and all of the fall the thing is the best thing since sliced bread.” 3:22:42 PM 7/21/03 “What kinda bread there sierra?” 3:30:48 PM 7/21/03 “Mine was a $200 fan marked down to $75 at Home Depot. Most are $100 - $150.” 3:38:00 PM 7/21/03 “I'll sell you all some used 48" chicken house fans for $100...oh..don't worry if the $hit hits the fan...it'll just match the rest of it.” 4:37:56 PM 7/21/03 “I'm a big fan of whole houses...half houses just don't cut it.” 4:41:15 PM 7/21/03 “maybe some people can only afford half houses bit...where's your compassion?? ;-) WK: The best bread my friend...the BEST!” 6:34:34 PM 7/21/03 “My air conditioner works great.” 8:21:39 PM 7/21/03 “so does mine...but I could have bought you more than just "a few" beers bacpac with the money I've saved using my whole house fan when comditions permit. :-)” 9:05:16 PM 7/21/03 This spring,,, “Put a 30 incher in the attic entrance. Pull chain style w/louvers. It really moves the air. Looking to get a thermostatically controlled attic fan to mount in my rear gable sometime this fall when its not so hot up in there. Also I wanna rig the house fan to swing up and out of the way so the attic is still accessable.” 10:40:58 PM 7/21/03
