Whole House Fans

“I just bought one and it's fantastic! My energy bill dropped a ton this past month even though it's been the hotest month so far. When I run it at night, then turn it off about 7am and shut the windows and doors, I usually don't have to turn on the AC until late in the afternoon - and only for an hour or two.”

“We put one in our house when we moved in 7 years ago. It has a rheostat on it to adjust the speed. It's on whenever it’s cooler outside than in. We rarely use our AC.”

“This is what I thought you guys were talkng about. It is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

You can buy the fan and louver system at any Menard's, Home Depot, or Lowe's. I think they run like $150, but I could be mistaken. Unit should be installed in a hallway in center of house, if possible. Make sure you get a model that has 2 speeds.”

“I've wanted one for years. Almost every night during spring, summer, and fall, the temp outside is below 70, yet we are running the A/C to cool the inside down 74 or so. I hate paying to make cool air when there is plenty of it outside for free. Just need to pull it into the house.

Maybe next spring.”

“Mine squeeks a little bit after it starts up but after about 5 minutes, it just sounds like the vent over your stove. Just not as loud.”

“I turn mine on when it gets below 78 or 79 degrees outside. That's usually around 12:30pm this time of year, but spring..parts of the summer...and all of the fall the thing is the best thing since sliced bread.”

“Mine was a $200 fan marked down to $75 at Home Depot. Most are $100 - $150.”

“Put a 30 incher in the attic entrance. Pull chain style w/louvers. It really moves the air. Looking to get a thermostatically controlled attic fan to mount in my rear gable sometime this fall when its not so hot up in there. Also I wanna rig the house fan to swing up and out of the way so the attic is still accessable.”
