BIG LOTS!View Messages“My local BIG LOTS! store has the Bahlsen Hit Cookies REI sells for $1 for about 75 cents. Pretty dang good cookies in a trail friendly package. Weight of 5.7 oz a package. About 840 calories. I stocked up. :)” 9:44:02 AM 7/22/03 “german cookies. :) one of my favorites. I saw it the other day in an ad. too many calories for me though.” 9:46:11 AM 7/22/03 “It's hiking fuel Gemini!” 9:46:55 AM 7/22/03 “LMAO Big butt! big butt!” 9:48:43 AM 7/22/03 “Is this what German hit men eat or something?” 9:56:51 AM 7/22/03 “Those are awesome. We scored with the hazelnut chocolate wafer things at the PX on base last weekend. Usually pay $1 each, they were $.33!!!” 2:05:46 PM 7/22/03 “Scored some 'gear' at Big Lots! today. Got some Amaretto and Mocha Cappuccina mixes in 1-serving envelopes. Also got some Bear Creek Creamy Potato Soup Mix in 2-serving trial size envelopes, just add water, cooks in 10 minutes. Picked up a couple of real nice little tins of gum, looks like they will make great little stove burners.” 7:23:13 PM 3/13/04 “You know you've been making stoves too long when everytime you see a piece of metal, you think of ways to turn it into a stove. lol...” 7:24:48 PM 3/13/04 “cool SS! I'll have to check the local Big Lots for that soup mix. I've only seen it in packages big enough to feed an entire scout troop.” 7:27:25 PM 3/13/04 “It's a sickness, bit. ;-)” 7:27:37 PM 3/13/04 “Me too, Gforce. I like the soup, but couldn't see packing those big packages. They were only 49 cents apiece.” 7:29:39 PM 3/13/04 “They just opened a Big Lots near where I work...It may become a new stop on the way home, lol... My kids'll never see me again.” 7:31:13 PM 3/13/04 “some of us see "Big Lots" and think you're building a house or sumthin' but that's OK, don't bother to tell the rest of the world what kind of a store (??) it might be. *pout* They've got food, I guess.” 10:28:50 PM 3/13/04 12:39:10 AM 3/14/04 “Do you have those stores they have in GA and FL? Convenience stores... I don't recall the REAL name, but I called them "Flash Floods." ???????????????????” 12:43:29 AM 3/14/04 “I can tell you a few things about Biglots..” 12:49:49 AM 3/14/04 “When you see something in Big Lots that you think you may need later, buy it right away, because it won't be there next week. Bob” 12:49:50 AM 3/14/04 “Hey, gforce and SS...we buy that potatoe soup in coffee can sized packages, just repackage a two serving amount in a ziplock. 3/4C mix to 2C water is two servings.” 9:33:54 AM 3/14/04 “Big Lots rule!” 9:38:29 AM 3/14/04 “I will agree that Big Lots is a very pimp store we buy tons of lawn stuff there. 8)” 6:05:12 PM 3/14/04 “I went there and got a few things today, including one of those thin aluminized car windshield heat reflector thingys, which I promptly cut up into a bag cozy for my dehydrated camp meals.” 6:08:02 PM 3/14/04 “Sass, I figured something like that must be possible. Men. Phhhhhht!!” 8:34:04 PM 3/14/04 “I bought my cook kit at Big Lots about 5 years ago for 4 bucks. Stainless, copper clad. Figured it would crap out in a year. Still going strong.” 7:50:40 AM 3/15/04 “i never heard of this place.....” 8:36:18 AM 3/15/04 “...potatoe soup in coffee can sized packages.... Sassafras 09:33:54 AM ...Men. Phhhhhht!! lizs 08:34:04 PM As a divorced guy that rairly cooks at home, about 90% of a coffee can size of potato soup mix would rot and take up shelve space way before it would be used. I learned this when I first started going to Sams Club and 'saved' all that money by buying in bulk. ;-) That is why the little premeasured packages are so appealing to me.” 9:30:06 AM 3/15/04 Ditto what lizs said, lol..... “But, Stovie, dear, you can also buy the 8 serving packages at the grocery store and repackage into 2 serving baggies for the trail. I understand the #10 can isn't for everyone. ;)” 10:33:39 AM 3/15/04 “People cook at home?” 10:35:42 AM 3/15/04 “Phhhhhht!! to 'potatoe' girl and lizs. ;-)” 10:40:21 AM 3/15/04 “Hey, I'm just making sure Ice Tea can read my posts! ;)” 10:43:36 AM 3/15/04 “Hey, I buy the big tubs of Gatorade and repackage them into 1-quart sizes, but that doesn't mean I'd rather just have 1-quart packets of Gatorade....” 10:49:38 AM 3/15/04 “'Camplife' brand closed cell foam pad -1/4" thick x 20" wide x 71" long -5.1 ounces -$3.99 (found over on Whiteblaze)” 11:54:04 AM 7/07/06 “1/4" thick? What are ya gonna do with that? Cut it up to make pot cozies? Cause ya sure as hell ain't gonna be able to sleep on it. LOL!” 6:49:41 AM 7/08/06 “NIgal, have you tried the aluminized bubble insulation stuff used for insulating houses as pot cozys? Works well and weighs NOTHING” 6:55:17 AM 7/08/06 “No I normally just stick it down my pants. LOL! No I use my hat. If it's not cold enough for a hat it's not cold enough for a cozy. Come to think of it I have some left over waterheater stuff that is felt sandwiched between the aluminum paper. I may make Stovie's cozy and try it out. last edited: 7/08/06 6:58:18 AM” 6:57:10 AM 7/08/06 “1/4 inch.....that's just enough to piss me off as to having carried it in” 9:43:56 AM 7/08/06 “chili..as much stuff as you carry in anyway........that's not yours...lol” 10:36:18 AM 7/08/06 “Now we know why Nigal never wears pants when he's home.” 1:05:51 PM 7/08/06 “I bring a small lightweight piece of the aluminized bubble wrap to sit on in hikes. Keeps your butt dry from a wet log or rock & in a little more comfort. Easily replaced if damaged & I love it for winter.” 1:20:16 PM 7/08/06 “I stopped by Big Lots today. Bear Creek soup was a buck a pouch for the individual serving size.” 5:09:55 PM 7/08/06 “Actually, that 1/4" can make a big difference if you use a Thermarest Ultralite or other inflatable pad in the winter. Using just my Ultralite on snow, I always got a tad cold. I now add a lightweight foam pad to it for winter trips and it makes a huge difference. You can also use the foam pad in the kitchen to sit on. last edited: 7/08/06 5:28:20 PM” 5:27:08 PM 7/08/06 “I'm going to quit posting lightweight gear threads here on TT. It's a complete waste of my time. Too much ignorance of the concept for most to understand. mtnsteve is the only one with a clue about it. Steve - that is exactly the use I had in mind for the 1/4" pad.” 6:22:45 PM 7/08/06 “Thanks for the tip---im going to see if the big lots by me has any. The only time I take sleeping pads for the most part is only in the cold months- winter and early spring. I still get cold with even the thermarest. Might add a foam pad as well to see if that helps.” 8:41:10 PM 7/08/06 “Naw, it's not a waste of time Stove. That'd be a great pad to carry for a dog. Prolly rolls up skinny.” 9:04:54 PM 7/08/06 ““Actually, that 1/4" can make a big difference if you use a Thermarest Ultralite or other inflatable pad in the winter." The first time I ever used my Nebo Megamid knockoff My ground sheet was slicker than snot on a marble so ended up sleeping on the T-rest UL directly on the snow. Wasn't bad at all. I sleep warm though. I've used my Insul Mat down to 15 degrees with no ill effects.” 10:30:01 PM 7/08/06 “I can't even use mine at 30° without feeling the cold come through. I was pretty disapointed about that. The insulmat sleeps more comfy but definately not as warm as a t-rest.” 10:36:46 AM 7/09/06 “No need to get so testy, SS. If sleeping better means another pound, then that's where I am going to carry the weight, every time. I look at it this way..... You spend about half of your time on the trail in a pair of boots. You spend a little over a third of the day carrying your pack. (assuming you are covering any type of mileage) You spend about a third of the day laying down. Now, given that, it seems to me that boots, pack and sleeping gear are the places to ensure comfort, IMHO.” 7:31:43 AM 7/10/06 “i bought one of those car window shields at BigLots. not like the regular ones, it's thinner, has a silver lining on one side [no bubbles though] and foam on one side. SO LIGHT!! that sucker kept me warm and I wish I could find it in a larger version.” 7:42:11 AM 7/10/06 ““1/4 inch.....that's just enough to piss me off as to having carried it in” chili 9:43:56 AM No need for you to make some smarta$$ remark about a possible cheap component of a lightweight sleeping system.” 7:44:07 AM 7/10/06 Stovey... “Maybe if you learn to quit crying you can reduce the amount of tissues that you carry and thus lighten your pack. ; )” 2:38:46 PM 7/11/06 “Bear Creek soup was a buck a pouch for the individual serving size.” chili i've made the mistake of buying food for a backpacking trip at biglots once before...i'll never do it again...i think it's the first and only trip i've been on that i actually ran out of TP” 2:44:18 PM 7/11/06
