knives and other sharp objects “Hello! This is my first time posting. I'm going on my first camping/backpacking trip in October. I'm going to fly to Colorado (Rocky Mountain NP), and then drive to California (Redwood NP). I know they will not let anyone take knives or axes on a commercial jet. I thought about picking them out at a camping store out in Colorado, but I don't want to do that everytime I want to go backpacking by-way-of airline. Is there anyway I could mail these items to a ranger station or somewhere similar. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Regan” 3:28:35 PM 7/23/03 “I believe you can pack them in your checked luggage. Heck, you can still carry guns that way, as long as you declare them.” 3:31:12 PM 7/23/03 “I doubt you'll need to take an axe.” 3:31:48 PM 7/23/03 “can't knives go in checked luggage, especially if you declare them?..fuel, stoves and fuel bottles are most of the probs” 3:31:58 PM 7/23/03 Oh C'Mon.... “Hide yer knife in yer shoe.” 3:32:27 PM 7/23/03 “Are they giving people problems over their stove? Fuel and the fuel bottles, I'd heard that.” 3:34:24 PM 7/23/03 “Or in a stuffed animal. They will never suspect anything.” 3:35:00 PM 7/23/03 “That is true Bit. I was behind some people at the airport a month ago that had a Dragonfly and fuel taken away.” 3:36:10 PM 7/23/03 “All the more reason to use homemade alcohol stoves or Esbit!” 3:38:24 PM 7/23/03 “they kinda get in a tizzy in things that USED to have fuel in them..something about residue or left overs in the stoves and empty bottles” 3:39:32 PM 7/23/03 “Very true. Denali, troll call your airline first to see if you can pack the knife, chainsaw, gun or whatever it is want to take in your suitcase that will be in the storage compartment under the plane. If they say no, just buy whatever you need upon arrival.” 3:41:34 PM 7/23/03
