Superior Hiking Trail Anyone??

“Just curious if we have any fans of the Superior Hiking Trail? And if we do, would anyone be interested in putting together a little outing sometime in September? I'd like to spend four or five days out there, don't mind which part of the trail, but would like to have company...

i am a huge fan of the SHT. i haven't been there for 5 years....i'd love to join you on the trail, but i'm too far away now to make it.
have you hiked it/parts of it before?”

“yeah... ok, i kinda have school... but i could catch up with ya for a weekend, i'm only up in ely, so it's a short drive i could meet up with ya. Let me know - i've been on that trail several times, love it - any questions i'd be happy to answer.”

“I'm a huge fan too. I thru-hiked it in 2001, and it was every bit as good as they say. I'd love to do it all again.
Problem is, it's a 600 mile drive just to Duluth...”

“I'd like to start in Silver Bay and rock-n-roll at least to the Caribou River Wayside. Of course, all of the planning is subject to input from other people who would like to join :)I've already hiked the trail between Silver Bay and Caribou Wayside and I love it - that's why I wanna do it again.

My hope is that we could plan the trip for later September. Wanna catch the fall colors!! But if we had to go a little early, that would be cool to.”

“The Superior Hiking Trail is by far my favorite trail in the country (and this coming form someone who has also lived in Colorado, Washington & Alaska). I led a 25-mile trip on the trail during college, and have camped in every state park along the trail. I\'m also in the planning stages for a September hike, but will probably only be able to do 2-3 days because of school. “I'm booked throug Aug.

Personally this is the worst time to go on it for two reasons....

1) Tourists
2) Mosquitos that will carry you away.

End of Sept it prime, the cooler weather gets rid of both.”

“I would enjoy getting up in those woods.

I expect to arrive in Minnesota on Aug. 26th and may stay through the weekend. I could join a hike during that week or, possibly the next. There is a long weekend in that period.

Please note that I am not a long distance runner. I did make it up to Mt. le Conte in GSMNP this weekend, but it was borderline on my current capabilities.”

“Lizs and simer190 - I plan to contact both of you as things firm. Currently, I plan to return my youngest daughter to Grinnell on August 25th. Everything is open after that, except that I want to visit relatives in White Bear Lake near St. Paul.

I would really like to do part of the Lake Wobegon Trail.”

“return her? What did you do, steal her?”

“I did my thru-hike "mid-late september" and it was perfect. Saw a good number of dayhikers, most all late middle-aged women who were very pleasant to talk with.

Never saw a single backpacker.

No bugs, great weather, highly recommended.”

“That trail is all day hikers it seems. You have to go way up to the nothern sections, Grand Marais, Ely to get the hardcore guys. Farther north you go less people later in the year as well.

If you make it Grand Marais, swing by Eagle Mountain highest peak in MN, great Superior view. Wow.”

“Simer... when do you go back to school, cuz you're going to Ely, right? We should hike at a state park somewhere or something. Forestville is real nice by Preston. (course there are some horseys)”

“I'm serious. Labor Day weekend might be a good time for about a 10 to 15 mile hike. In fact, I might be able to get some of my family to join us.”
