Phaedrus,
While we can't lay the entire blame on Gray Davis, has he done anything to resolve the problems? Has he gone to the legislature an gotten tough with the big spenders? Some how Sacramento thinks tax increases are the only way out of this mess, but the only thing tax increases will do is drive more business and people over the state line.

I think it's high time that the people of this state tighten their belts and that includes children, welfare recipients, veterans etc. The only wat I see to accomplish this is to get some fresh ideas in Sacramento be they Dem or Rep.

Real scary, huh
For Pete's sake, he is even using those old tired movie lines...sounds like a joke.

I wish just ONE of these clowns would tell us just what they plan to do to get CA back in the black...oh yea, that would be either cut services, like fire Dept's, cops and schools or raise tax's.

This is a true story: One of my former students used to work on the Santa Monica Pier many years ago. He ran one of the rides (ferris wheel I think). Arnold Schwarzenegger came up with his kids and asked how they could go on the ride. He told them they needed to buy a ticket at the ticket booth. Arnold said, "OK. I'll be back." My student (who has a great sense of humor) immediately said, "Please. Don't do that!! I'll let you on right now. Just grab your kids and get on. I've seen what happen when you say, 'I'll be back.'"

He said Arnold really got a kick out of that and laughed out loud.

FYI: Other entertainers elected to office in California:

Ronald Reagan (Governor)
George Murphy (Senator)
Sonny Bono (Congressman)

The news today said that many Democrats are starting to distance themselves from Gray. We have models and porn stars entering the race, not to mention Larry Flynt. Arianna Huffington is running as an independent.

The budget is on his desk to sign. With a $38 billion deficit last year, they are still proposing a budget that is $2 Billion more than last year's!! (So, if the budget is going up $2 Billion, why are they cutting the California State University by 13%?. Who's getting the funding?)

I say cut every agency and program by whatever percentage it takes to balance the budget. Spread the hurt around. There is much waste and fat in all government (and industry too). Gray's problem is that he would have to lay off the state employees he hired to pay off the unions...which they would not like. But, they said today his approval rating is down to 22%. What does he have to lose?

Hold on!

He served two terms. Either he was doing things right or the American people were too dumb to realize they had a choice in '84. Maybe they wer e just glad they weren't sitting in Carter's gas station lines anymore.

Here's the real powerhouse in the upcoming race:
(CNN) -- Gary Coleman, child star of the sitcom "Diff'rent Strokes," has placed his name among a host of other celebrities in the running for California governor.

Coleman's candidacy was engineered by the East Bay Express, an Oakland-area newspaper, which paid his $3,500 filing fee, collected the necessary petition signatures and is promoting his candidacy in protest of the scheduled vote aimed at recalling Gov. Gray Davis.

Coleman's campaign treasurer, Steve Buel, editor of the East Bay Express, told CNN that the actor's name "resonates with the voters."

Buel said he had no trouble getting the necessary 65 petition signatures from Independent voters in Alameda County, which he gathered at a recent Oakland A's baseball game.

The Alameda County Registrar of Voters confirmed Wednesday that a representative for Coleman filed the necessary petition signatures and paid the required fee at the courthouse in Oakland, California. He registered as an Independent.

California voters will decide October 7 whether to recall Gov. Gray Davis, a Democrat, and who should replace him.

"I thought (the recall) was a joke. They thought it was a joke. And I thought, hey, why not," Coleman, 35, told CNN. "I'm probably the least qualified for the job, but I'll have some great people around me."

"It's true that there is a farcical quality to the entire recall effort. But Gary's candidacy is no more farcical than that of Arnold Schwarzenegger, or Arianna Huffington, or the comedian Gallagher," Buel said.

Schwarzenegger, Huffington and Gallagher have all announced they will seek to replace Gov. Davis.

Schwarzenegger's announcement came at a Wednesday afternoon taping of NBC's "The Tonight Show" with Jay Leno.

Coleman, speaking shortly after film star Arnold Schwarzenegger announced he was running for governor, predicted that Schwarzenegger would win -- and Coleman said he would vote for the "Terminator."

"Now that Arnold is in the race, there is no race. Gray Davis needs to pack his bags," he said. "I'm going to stay in the race, but I'm not going to campaign."

On Diff'rent Strokes from 1978 to 1986, Coleman played Arnold Drummond, who, along with his brother, Willis (played by Todd Bridges), was adopted by a wealthy man after their mother, the man's maid, died.

His trademark retort, "Whatchu talkin' 'bout," became a well-known catch phrase.

Former Governor Jerry Brown (now mayor of Oakland) was on TV last night commenting on Arnold. He said that if Arnold comes across well and can address the issues in the media articulately over the next few days, he has a chance. He said that Arnold's first impression is very important and that the political press is different than the entertainment press.

Let me know what happens...I'm outta here until Sunday.

Funny how conservatives gave carter miles of crap and inferred that he was a wimp for supporting such an un-he-man issue as Human Rights... only to fall back on it as an excuse for Gulf War II.

The Iranian revolution was pulled off by religious fundamentalists without Carter's help or approval.
The revolution was the fruits of the CIA-engineered installation of the Shah in 1953 done to keep Iran from nationalizing the oil industry in Iran.
Carter was farming peanuts in '53, I do believe.

Porn Star Says She'll Seek Governor's Office
Candidate Wants To Swap Guns For Porn

www.nbcsandiego.com

LOS ANGELES
-- Promising to make lap dances tax deductible if elected, porn star Mary Carey Tuesday collected signatures outside Los Angeles City Hall in her bid for California's top political post.

"My goal is to bring happiness to the streets of California,'' the 5' 9" blonde told a small group of reporters.

Sporting a star-spangled bikini top, Tommy Hilfiger shorts and 4-inch-high platform sandals, 22-year-old Carey stopped passers-by in her bid to gather the 65 signatures needed to run for governor in the Oct. 7 recall election.

She was flanked by her manager and two supporters, one carrying a sign that read "Californians Prefer Blondes.''

Carey said her platform includes taxing breast implants to generate revenue; hiring adult film stars to help negotiate better wholesale electricity prices; and creating a "Porno for Pistols '' program, where gun owners can to swap their weapons for X-rated films.

"If more guys had orgasms, they'd be less violent,'' said Carey, who said she'd run as an Independent.

Her solution to global warming?

"Wear less clothes.''

As Saturday's filing deadline to enter the October recall election nears, an eclectic crew of potential candidates have pulled nomination papers. Few have yet to officially file and pay the $3,500 fee.

Besides more serious potential contenders such as former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan and actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, prospective candidates include Hustler magazine publisher and self-described "smut peddler'' Larry Flynt and aspiring platinum-haired billboard queen Angelyne.

I didn't call him selfish or a wimp. Just because you're quick to call someone names doesn't mean everyone is. The fact remains that Carter's foreign policy was weak.
On the plus side, I've finally found two people who think he was a great president.

Weeeelllll, there are those who call Carter such things....not necessarily you stick.

I don't think Carter was a great president, but he is maligned unfairly.

Carter did inherit the economic wreckage from the Vietnam War....the bills came due on his watch.
The inflation caused by events before Carter's presidency hit full stride by the mid-'70s.

I believe that to say Carter's foreign policy was weak is a mis-characterization.

Few bother to mention that Carter withdrew the U.S. Olympic Team from the '80 Olympics in Moscow in protest of the U.S.S.R.'s invasion of Afganistan.
This act was very unpopular, but he bucked popular opinion on that one.
And yet there are those who say he was a wimp......not YOU Stickman.

In early '79 there were farm tractors, BIG ones, parked around The Mall in Washington as part of a farmer's protest.

In February '79 we got over two feet of snow and the tractors were helping pull people through it.

I don't recall any "Jimmy Carter's gas lines".
There may have been a price spike or two that year.

I've read accounts of the "gas crisis" in '73 being cooked-up by the industry to push the Alaska Pipeline.

It all goes to Asia.

Tilt, you're an old fart compared to me, so your memory would serve better. I'm relying on memory of what I've read. I seem to recall that price per barrel increased almost 3X. Given that, I may have spoke too soon in assuming a 3x price increase led to long lines at the pumps. However, I still contend that these "strong arm" tactics by the oil producing countries could have been handled better by the Carter admin.
