Need info on Split Mountain in Sierras
I just got invited to go on a backpack to Split Mountain in the Sierras, has anyone done this hike?
We're going the first weekend in Aug., what might the temps be like? I've checked a few web pages for info but I'm looking for more firsthand knowledge of trail conditions.

Thanks!

We've done Split (14,058')twice

Sept 3, 1999 = great weather, wore shorts and tank, but carried raingear in our packs

Sept 11, 2001 = whiteout, snow flurries, started out with shorts but later wore raingear. 7am it was 40 deg, 8:30pm it was 55 deg. Lunch at the top, sun came out. one hour down, I realized I lost my nalgene, and we still had 11 days on the trail. I backtracked, ended up going all the way to the summit for the second time that day. Light snow later that evening, but it didn't stick. Camp was at Lake 11,598'. There is no real trail, a few cairns, but easy to get up to. There's a snow patch near the summit, so once you reach it you're 5 min away. (notes from our JMT journal)

This is pretty much what the trail looked like once we got to the Prater/Split saddle

ok, back to packing!
