Some considerations in your list - Seattle is a huge city, very crowded. Portland isn't much better. There may be jobs, but it is big city living with long drives on the freeway, smog, crime, etc. Ft. Collins is much less so. It is also in the desert, if I remember right. Boise is pretty much desert too. If you need green, that may not be the place for you. Boulder is a great town in a lot of ways, but very expensive to live in. If you are looking to buy a house, it may not be a good choice.

where would I like to live...
well thats easy...

I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus' garden in the shade
He'd let us in, knows where we've been
In his octopus' garden in the shade

I'd ask my friends to come and see
An octopus' garden with me
I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus' garden in the shade.

We would be warm below the storm
In our little hideaway beneath the waves
Resting our head on the sea bed
In an octopus' garden near a cave

We would sing and dance around
because we know we can't be found
I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus' garden in the shade

We would shout and swim about
The coral that lies beneath the waves
(Lies beneath the ocean waves)
Oh what joy for every girl and boy
Knowing they're happy and they're safe
(Happy and they're safe)

We would be so happy you and me
No one there to tell us what to do
I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus' garden with you.

hehehe...

Yeah, but here in Alabama we don't have the mild winters that Boise evidently has.

Funny this thread should show up now. I just returned from WY and am creating the 3 year plan to move out west. The big kicker is making a living. I buy merchandise for a large retailer and there are not many based in the west. But here goes, without consideration of employment:

Bozeman
Missoula
Cody

More likely with employment opportunities:

Helena, WA
Sandpoint, ID
Cody, WY

In 2006 my daughter graduates high school and I'll have it ironed out.

LIBBY, Mont. - When Bob Dedrick had a routine chest X-ray before a gall bladder operation, the doctor returned with the results and a question.
"Where do you live?" the doctor asked.

"Libby, Montana," Dedrick said.

"That explains it."

This small town of 2,800 residents in remote northwestern Montana has become shorthand for a public health disaster of tragic proportions - and lingering questions of corporate and governmental culpability.

The scarring that the doctor saw on Dedrick's lungs identified his hometown as clearly as a local accent, signaling that he, too, had inhaled the microscopic fibers of asbestos that swirled through Libby for decades. An estimated one-third of area residents have the tell-tale signs of asbestos-related lung disease, and more than 200 have died from it.

Stay away from Libby, Montana!

Boise jobs
I have no job problems lately. But I’m on the public tit, I work for the goberment. Boise is the state capital and the center most Fed activities in Idaho. The high tech sector is stagnate (Micron & HP). Lots of construction and service jobs. The jobs are here if you are persistent and get to know the right people. Remember, Boise IS in the desert (with skiing 15 miles away).

Wow, the winter temps for Boise are the same as Boone, NC. The summer temps are actually warmer than Boone, and without all the humidity.

Was actually in Jackson following a week long trip to Teton National Park. If I'd known, could'a visited and gotten the lowdown. Actually, do you know anything about the Sierra Trading Post operation. I hear that they are headquartered in Cody???

Why do you people keep mulling this one over? MT is the place to be, dudes! East or West, North or South . . . MT is beautiful and the air is clean. Of course, we really don't want you to move here either. We just want you to admit it rules. LOL!

Aero, last night at 1:00A we took a break at work and let the last of the reports run. You could smell the smoke so thick outside and you could see the Sheraton all bathed in fuzzy light. Where are the fires anyway? I miss the news, 'cause I'm at work.

Woops, I had to do some work! Yeah, it was really smokey last night! It was from the fires out by Hysham and we had an east wind.

Musselshell County too. Hope it doesn't get up in the Bulls again- although there's not much left to burn up there!

Phil, if you're in the Health care field (especially nursing) it's a job-seeker's market! They're hiring nurses from the Philipines because there's such a shortage. The retiree's moving here should help fuel the demand as well!
aero

Yeah, I understand that side of things Phil.

Aero, I didn't realize that there were fires in Musselshell co. I'll have to give Ma a call and find out where they are, I'm sure they won't do much damage in the Bulls. They only clean up the crap from the previous fire.

I hear you on the no jobs there front. I'd be in Missoula right now if there were jobs, but I ended up going to Phoenix instead. Lots of job and more than a lifetime of hiking. Still like to head up to MT and hike when I can.

Looks like we are going to Idaho the week after Christmas to check out things....I wonder how the roads are then? Should we rent a 4wd vehicle if we are going to drive through the whole state?
Adventurist

Well I checked out Idaho at the beginning of January....

I drove all over the state...looked at Boise and looked at Moscow.
I just wish they could take the jobs from Boise and stick them near the University in the North. Otherwise the state was awesome.

Sooo anyway after mulling it over we decided if we move anywhere this summer is going to be Colorado. Most likely Fort Collins but somewhere between Fort Collins and Longmont. Boulder is way too expensive.

I just wanted to thank everyone for his or her help, advice, input...

Special thanks to Idaho Bob for giving me guidance on areas in Idaho...he really was a big help.

So first we are aiming to put the house on the market on April 5.

Then we need to have the house sold by July 5.

Then we need to move by the end of the August.

Hopefully everything falls in to place!

Wish us luck!

Good luck Adventurist

I build a lot of homes on the oceanfront in Maine. Beautiful spots. But you can't swim in them, too cold. You can't skate there as the ocean doesn't freeze well. I kinda always thought living on a lake would be pretty good. So last year we bought a piece of property on a pond. This year we'll be a building in Barrington N.H.

monkeyboy, you'll love living in NH. No state sales tax and no state income tax if you're working in NH. It looks like you'll be about 75 miles and an hour and a half from where I live. We'll have to join up for some adventures.

I got the Silver Lake Wilderness for my Back Yard, Lake Algonquin in my front yard. Bordering on the Siamese Ponds Wilderness. 7 miles from the NPT Trailhead at Whitehouse.

Skiracer, we will have to get together for some adventures!

Twigeater, I do remember a couple of Maine wimmin swimmin in the ocean..... sigh.... I saw the harbors in front of all three of my jobs frozen solid a couple weeks ago. And people walking out there too! It's been a right cold one this year, and the seas calm enough not to break em open, too.

The house we plan to build will have an attached garage big enough to properly store our gear and kayaks!

We'll be watching the trip page for a Colorado TT trip, Feeney!

If I had a choice to live anywhere in the entire world, it would be Maine. Somewhere deep in northern Maine...
If I absolutely had to move someplace else I'd go to Canada.
I wouldn't feel right anywhere else.
