Madison, WI

No big hills, but culture and short drive to lots of hiking, skiing--cross and down, canoe/kayaking.

"much more than anyone in Northern California could possibly imagine, all right here within a couple hours drive"

Well USA, I'm in Seattle area a lot, so I can imagine what it's like there, don't be so f$%King condescending.

You forgot to mention the endless months of overcast grey skies, rain every day, etc. So depressing it was acknowledged as the suicide capital of the country for years.

Other than that, it's one of my fav places.

I can see the appeal of California, I do love it there. But I love Southern Utah. When I visited there I was very happy. I loved AZ too.

My answer southwest U.S.

What I learned in Southern Utah: Everything closes way too early and you couldn't get a local to move fast if you lit their ass on fire.

I've been pondering where I will live during retirement for about a year now. I live in a great place with great watersport and other activites from riding my jetski to hunting. The problem is that overpopulation is spoiling this area. I live between Baton Rouge and New Orleans and I'm being squashed in between. I haven't moved to surburbia it has moved to me.

I'm 37 and have 18 years or less to plan and purchase my dream home. I'm currently leaning towards the Southern Rockies. Somewhere in New Mexico. I want nearby mountains, low population density, mild winters, low humidity summers and nearby lakes, rivers and streams. Eagle Nest Lake, NM is currently one of my favorites. I plan to buy retirement land somewhere within the next 5 years.

Where would you live if you were retired might be a very different question than "where would you live", assuming one is still active & wants to do a lot of things... outdoor things, specifically.

I'm curious Bateauxdriver... why do you want to retire? Do you just want to sit on your a$$ & do nothing? I don't mean that perjoritively... I just don't quite understand wanting to do nothing with my life? Do you have other goals / aspirations?

Wanderer, I currently have a great paying but fairly demanding job. I have plans to do lots of fun activities when I retire. I put away as much money as I can, to continue to do fun things in retirement. If I retire in a coastal area like I live in now, I plan to be active in the Coast Guard Auxillary, or if a mountain setting, possibly the Civil Air Patrol or search and rescue. I have friends retired and working that are involved in those civil groups and enjoy them thourghly. I may also become active in a volunteer fire and rescue unit. I am currently being trained by my company to be a Confined Space Rescue Tech, Fire Brigade Member and EMT. I only have EMT training left to complete. I plan to be active but hopefully, I will not need a paying job by then. When not actively doing all that great volunteer work I plan to be camped high in the Rockies or camped on a sand spit of land fishing for tasty trout.

There is no way in hell, I aspire to be a door greeter at Walmart.

Why do some people automatically assume that when one says they want to retire they mean sit on one's butt?? When I retire I can do good works and do volunteer vacations.

It is weird, I didn't think that Bateuxdriver was going to be sedentary when speaking of retirement.

Probably somewhere near Four Corners or maybe NorCal or even Arizona, outside of Flagstaff.

I think I’ll stay in Upstate New York. I have a great job, although I wish the pay were a little bit better, the climate is nice, and have 6 million acres of lakes, rivers, and mountains in the Adirondack Park to explore. Why would I want to leave?

Local Climate

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trinidad is situated on the front wall of the Rocky Mountains at an elevation of 6,025 above sea level. Its location near the southern border of Colorado results in a semi-arid climate with approximately 14 inches of rainfall per year.
The elevation, southern location, and low humidity combine to provide a moderate, very comfortable dry climate.

I may have something in the works involving Sawteeth, Blake, Colvin, Dial, & Nippletop. I will need to figure out when I'll have a free weekend. Also let me know when you want to hit up the Santanoni Range, I think I've finally got all the mud out of my gear from the last time I was there.

"Sex Change Capital of the World!!!!!!!!!!!"
Arggg! And I was ready to buy a 50 acre ranchette there. It is still a great place though. I had a great steak there once at the Blackjack Saloon.

Main article: Stanley Biber
Trinidad has been dubbed the "Sex Change Capital of the World," because a local doctor had an international reputation for his sex reassignment surgery. In the 1960's, Dr. Stanley Biber, a veteran surgeon returning from Korea, decided to move to Trinidad because he had heard that the town needed a surgeon. In 1969 a local social worker asked him if he would perform the surgery for her, which he learned by consulting diagrams and a New York surgeon. Biber attained a reputation as a good surgeon at a time when very few doctors performed the operations. At his peak, Biber was performing roughly four sex change operations a day, and the term "taking a trip to Trinidad" became a euphemism for some seeking the procedures he offered. His surgical practice was taken over in 2003 by Marci Bowers. Trinidad's reputation as the sex change capital has been uncomfortable for some residents, as it is otherwise a socially conservative small town. However, the revenue brought in by Biber was important to keeping the local hospital running, and Biber was himself a respected community leader.
