“Two responses to Strat:

1) I definitely think Bush fits into Bin-Laden's scheme of things. Far more moslems believe that there is a war between the US and Islam - precisely what Bin-Laden wants.

2) The idea at the start of the Federalist cut and paste that "the the warfront with Jihadistan is attracting" ignores the whole issue of supply and demand. If there were only a finite number of irreplacable "Jihadis" this would make sense, but the supply will definitely increase, because the demand has increased.

Actually, Strat - they may be proving how murderous they are, but I think this way, but they are also pursuing some intelligent, if amoral, strategy. By attacking the UN, the Red Cross, and Italy... they are trying to isolate the US in Iraq. Of course they don't want international agencies like the UN or the Red Cross involved. They want the US trapped and exposed for as long as they can keep the US there. Like a smaller boxer, with short arms and less agility... they see the US has overcommitted and come in to close and they want to keep us there for as long as they can to get in as many little punches as they can. Anything that would internationalize the war, lead to burden sharing... let us get back into our corner, is to be avoided.

Al Qeda and other radical islamists want as much war,as wide a war, and as bloody a war as they can get for as long as possible.”

Many of these "extremests" are having that which they love destroyed merely by the existence of America. The fundamentalist Muslims have a very strict and rigid lifestyle, and the American way of life has been increasingly inflitrating their society. Their kids want to dress and be like our kids. They resent us for some of our freedoms, and think that we are evil for some of our more "extreme" freedoms. We are ALL evil to them. They are REQUIRED to either convert us or KILL us. Not only because their religion says so, but because we are polluting the future of their society with our own "extreme" liberties.”
