From "The War of the Worlds"
During the opposition of 1894 a great light was seen on the illuminated part of the disk, first at the Lick Observatory, then by Perrotin of Nice, and then by other observers. English readers heard of it first in the issue of Nature dated August 2. I am inclined to think that this blaze may have been the casting of the huge gun, in the vast pit sunk into their planet, from which their shots were fired at us. Peculiar markings, as yet unexplained, were seen near the site of that outbreak during the next two oppositions.

A friend of mine sent me this in an e mail. It reiterates a lot of what what stated already, but makes some of the pertinent information more concise for viewing Mars this August...

CLOSE ENCOUNTER WITH MARS
>
>
>
>
>This month and next Earth is catching up with Mars, an encounter
>that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in
>recorded history. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287. Due
>to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its orbit,
>astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not come this close to
>Earth in the last 5,000 years but it may be as long as 60,000 years.
>
>
>
>The encounter will culminate on August 27 when Mars comes to
>within 34,649,589 miles and will be (next to the moon) the brightest
>object in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will
>appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest 75 power magnification Mars
>will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye.
>
>
>
>Mars will be easy to spot. At the beginning of August, it will
>rise in the east at 10 pm and reach its azimuth at about 3 am. But by
>the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at
>nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30 am. That's
>pretty convenient when it comes to seeing something that no human has
>seen in recorded history.
>
>
>
>So, mark your calendar at the beginning of August to see Mars
>grow progressively brighter and brighter throughout the month.
>
>
>
>Share this! No one alive today will ever see this again.

When I worked in sales (briefly and never again), they told me that if we sold at a rate of 15%, we would be making lots of money. i had to stop and think that if I was a surgeon and had that success frequency.....

NASA Science News for August 7, 2003

The south polar ice cap of Mars is receding, revealing frosty mountains, rifts and curious dark spots. Got a telescope? You can see it yourself.

Yep! We've gone from an 8-year drought to full-and-about-to-overflow lakes and rivers in the last 9 months. And we've gotten a downpour of almost an inch every other day all Summer long.

Somewhere in the world, someone inherited our drought.
