Am I missing something, or is this overkill?

They called in a helicopter because he "fell and hurt his ankle"?! Wimps!

By this standard, the 13th Air Force should have come to my aid when I broke my leg!

Thompson Island must be the type of place that looks down their nose at Kennebunkport.

How much could this have cost?

I came about 200 yards from being char-broiled while canoeing up in Quetico Provincial Park. Our group was stranded in a section of the park because fire cut us off. We had to paddle hard against gail force wind and waves being kicked up. Ended up spending an extra day in the park because no one came to get us.

The kid was from New Jersey.

He's special.

That explains everything. Thanks for pointing that out to us V!

Means he couldn't have found his way out if he hadn't hurt his leg!

Somehow, I think there are more details than disclosed in that brief article.

There is a very exclusive private community in Kinnelon.

God don't let Twinkle see this i told her that she would have to pay up front for a helicopter ride. I think that is the only thing that got her off the mountain.

When I was 14 I sprained an ankle coming down South Brother in Baxter State... I hopped it out with a long wooden pole my friends found and either crawled, ass slid or had my arms around my friends shoulders when it got tough. It never occured to me that we should get outside help.

I do wonder what the rest of the story is (did someone exaggerate? was it a training rescue mission? was there something that made them legitamately think it was more serious? Did the paper get it wrong?)

Kinnelon boy. Someone in the group had a satellite phone. Dad's a CEO?

Given that they had a satellite phone, I'm sure someone called Daddy and he authorized the price of a rescue. I'm not certain why the National Guard did the rescue other than they needed a little practice. I cannot find any other information that would justify such a response for a sprained ankle. I guess Outward Bound programs no longer emphasize self-reliance.

Pssst, don't tell Twinkle Toes they helio you off a mountain for a sprained ankle.

How much those things cost? If not a CEO, then perhaps a CFO, COO?

They couldn't carry him down? How much did this kid weigh?

Damn, he could of hobbled down.

Wimp.

They don't even say he broke his ankle...just hurt it? Someone should wrap this kid in bacon jewelry and do us all a favor by closing that end of the gene pool off.

The article said they continued on their trip after the rescue. Sounds like a show I saw on a major Marlin tourney somewhere in Mexico. These guys had every piece of fishing equipment imaginable, but forgot to take enough beer. So they called up a helicopter company and had them fly out 4 or 5 cases of beer and some beef jerky (just kidding about the jerky)

What a cold cruel heartless bunch you all are.

Did you not see that he "hurt" his ankle, I mean major boo boo, not a sprain or a break, but it HURT as in ouch and OW, possibly even worse than getting a tetanus shot.

He needed his mommeee NOW. What took that helo so long, this ankle hurt.

At least he deserves a purple heart, perhaps a parade even, he got hurt.

This must really uplift the stature of Outward Bound.

Seems funny to me that they brought a satellite phone with them, but not a medical kit that could handle sprains/breaks. It must have been their plan to begin with. -- completely irresponsible. I hope they had to pay for all of the expenses, because otherwise all of us had to pay for some snooty little kid's free helecopter ride.

Seems like proper medical treatment and then rigging a way to carry their group member to safety would have a been a great lesson for the outward bound kids.

Instead they learned that if someone has a satelite phone you can have your ass bailed out.

What will they do when there's no phone and the injury is serious?
