“My wife was visiting her mother with the kids yesterday and her mom gave her a package that contained old photographs that was her fathers from when he worked at NBC. There was a stack of pictures from the Mercury rocket launch with Alan Shepard. There must be 25 – 30 pictures of the rocket, Shepard undergoing examinations, Shepard in the capsule, the lift off and the recovery plus other photos, which include the other Mercury 7 astronauts. There is also a stack of NASA press releases. He had been down there covering the launch. Also included in the package were a few photos from Vietnam, photos of an anti war protest being broken up by police. There was also his press id and a stack of tickets from the 1960 Democratic national convention, a NBC directory from the 1964 Republican convention. There a few other items in there I haven’t gotten to yet. It is some really cool stuff and I’m having a great time going through it all, real interesting.” 6:03:50 PM 7/26/03 “Major find!! Cool. Everything you mentioned has recent historical importance.” 7:02:09 PM 7/26/03 “Cool. When I was growing up, a friend of mine found a bunch of old news reels from the 30’s 40’s in her aunts barn. The great aunt had owned a movie theater and stored them in there. There were some pretty cool ones in there. My favorite was a total mock on the Nazis.” 7:38:28 PM 7/26/03 Must Hike “Like Phil said. Major find! Hope you can preserve them or get the stuff to someone who can preserve them for longevity.” 10:58:19 PM 7/26/03
