Farewell, beloved PatchyG

“This past weekend, I made the hardest decision of my life...

PatchyG is gone after 17.5 years of blessing my world. She was a devoted traildog and my companion for countless miles. The BEST hiking partner I could ask for...never complained, always seeing and smelling things I would have otherwise missed, and always made me feel better about myself since, no matter how bad my "trail funk" was, she always smelled worse. :)

You two did a wonderful job of raising each other. I'm so glad that I got meet Patchy and to walk with her a bit.

I'm so glad you've got another old and close friend there with you. The world offers loads of consolations and many other fine and glorious things, but nothing can ever replace a relationship like that.

“No, not PatchyG ... I'm sorry AmyG, more than 17 years is a good long time.”

“We lost our family companion last spring. She was one month short of 19 years. It was just as greaving as loosing a close relative. I still expect to see her there to welcome me sometimes when I open the front door. It is amazing how attached we become to our pets.

“My in-laws just lost thier dog. I have been apart of the famlily sice they got Alex. She was the goofiest (is that a word?) Cocker Spaniel. They were getting ready to take her last Monday morning to the vet to be put down. She rolled up in a ball on their laps and went naturally.

“I've been there a couple of times before- The first time, my family opted for the surgery, and my poor dog was never herself again- She only lasted a couple of months more in the end, and I'm sure she was miserable the whole time. The second time we faced that decision, the choice was much easier, even though the loss of another member of the family was not. My heart goes out to you guys.”

“I'm sorry to hear that. I finally have a puppy after being dogless for 13 years and even though I've only had her a coupl months I can't stand the thought of losing her. I recently lost my cat of 14 1/2 years. It is very hard and you have my sympathy.”

I have so many wonderful memories with Patch...driving her around in my car when I first got my license at 16 (but officer, she is a supervisory passenger!), taking her with me to college and the many subsequent crazy roommates we shared, getting married, buying a house...wow

It is just strange to not have her...she's been a piece of my life since I was 13.

One of the best things I can think of is that now she can come with me again on the trail. Yes Pennsy, this weekend we'll raise a toast...or ten to PatchyG. (and you guys may have to carry my arse back to the trailhead.
