Does anyone know were I can find a cheep 35mm camera? I’m going on a 9-day backpacking trip at the end of August and I don’t want to take my good camera. I can’t seem to find one that doesn’t have a zoom lens, flash, auto advance. I just want a simple camera that doesn’t require batteries.

I have used disposable cameras often at the beach or backpacking. I found the picture quality to be as good or better than the old "instamatics".

Finding one which doesn't use batteries is going to be difficult, as pretty much every camera out there these days has an on-board flash.

Best bet is check out Wolf Camera or similar, perhaps Wallyworld or Bestbuy or such. There are cheap ones out there, look for hang-displays as opposed to the display counters, as they usually reserve the latter for the more expensive units.

The problem with disposables is...

If you're planning to take more than a couple rolls of pix, then you're starting to haul a bunch of redundant camera bodies. Fine for a handful of shots, but I'd rather carry one camera body and three or four rolls of film.

True Dat, dee! I don't like that either. What about a cheal Advantax (don't know if that is spelled right) camera. These cameras give you 3 photo options and you can change to a different speed film mid-roll. I have a small one that I take when I go backpacking.

Check out pharmacy chains like Eckard, CVS or whoever is in your neck of the woods.

Ebay has Olympus OM line for peanuts, and they were state of the art for about 20 minutes one time.

Nah, how about two ounces instead? You can also velcro it to a small tree or a branch if you need it higher off the ground.

WK -- If APS works for you, great, but I tend to prefer 35mm if I'm going to use film. Select a good modern 400asa film and the film's lattitude will generally handle most situations if you need to push it a couple stops one way or the other.

For non-trail photog, I don't use film any more. I shoot with a Canon EOS 10D digital SLR. Blows most of the film options away totally.

I'm considering picking up a Canon S400 for trail use, though the S45 or S50 are attractive due to their ability to save the image in RAW format. But that's at the expense of an extra three ounces weight... :)
