Wednesday, July 30, 2003 - A heavyset man suspected of using his massive size as a weapon during a string of gas station robberies, including one in Seal Beach, has been arrested.

He was arrested outside his Anaheim home late Tuesday following a short foot pursuit. The 6-foot 6- inch man, who weighs upward of 400 pounds, is suspected in at least six robberies around Orange County, officials said.

Several television stations broadcast surveillance video Tuesday afternoon of a huge man using his size to gain advantage over a smaller gas station convenience store clerk, during a Laguna Hills holdup.

"Five minutes after (the broadcasts), we got three calls from tipsters pointing us to the suspect,' said Jim Amormino, an Orange County Sheriff's Department spokesman.

In Seal Beach in a July 24 holdup at a Mobil Gas Station at 12240 Seal Beach Blvd., during which he allegedly used his girth to corner the clerk and force the victim to give him money from the cash register.

He is suspected of similar robberies in Laguna Hills, Orange, Mission Viejo and Lake Forest throughout the past 10 days,

He is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.”
