Hooking up optical/wireless mouse

OK, computer gurus
I recently purchased a Microsoft "optical wireless mouse blue" (well, anyway the name is something like that)

I've had nothing but problems. Upon trying to install software, I got some message about a file missing. I checked the MS tech pages, found out I had to make an hour-long download of some software, which I did.

BTW, I have a Compaq Presario 5WV294 computer running Windows ME. The mouse connection is through a PS/2 port, however it also has a USB adapter connection on it.

I've hooked it up both ways. At first it worked some. But then it started locking up my computer when I turn it on.

I found some info (I forget if it was on MS or Compaq website). Although it wasn't specifically for my Compaq model, it told what to do for some other models when the thing locks up. It said to go into the Bios, look for the PS/2 connection and change it to "enable" rather than "auto-something." I went into the Bios, but have nothing quite that specific in my computer's offerings.

I also found something that said perhaps some file needs to be removed (which has to do with the earlier error, although it was not mentioned in that "fix") Should that be my next step? Any other ideas??!

Also, I made sure the wireless base unit is the required distance away. I tried to do what it said about changing frequencies, also.

Man, this is frustrating. I got this new mouse so I could smoothly trace around stuff in Photoshop applications. And now it just sits here.

Good luck with the ME Compaq combo on anything new since 2001.

First, get rid of the computer. I have that model and I would love to blow it up. What a piece of crap!!! I had trouble hooking up a optical mouse to lizs. In fact, everything I tried to load gave me trouble.

I plugged mine in and it worked. No problems but I'm running win2k pro.

winME is crap. Ditch it and get a better OS.

Not the best advice but I know no one how can stand winME.

I have two of those same mouses (mice?) but not the wireless model. I've hooked it up on an old POS Compaq (since donated to a poor kid), a several year old HP and my new HP without any trouble.

Why the wireless (except the cool factor)? Can you return it and get the regular model? You'll really love it for photoshop tracing. It is way more accurate and never gets gummed up.

Also - is there something keeping you from upgrading to XP? Adding new hardware is a lot easier and its rock solid stable.

I wouldn't mess with your BIOS unless you're sure what you're doing.

Everytime I see the windoze XP "grassy knoll" background I keep wondering when the Teletubbies are going to come skipping across the screen...

Had an optical (wired) it died on me in 4-5 months. Went back to the cordless "Logtech" works fine for me on both a desk- and lap-top.

I have a friend who has a wireless optical Logitech mouse. IT works fine.

Otherwise, I don't have huge complaints about ME. Who woulda thunk, huh?? And my Compaq is circa November 2000, Nowslimmer.

A wireless mouse sounds OK, but I really like trackballs. They seem to collect less dust.

I got the sales circular early. Best Buy will have the optical blue mouse (with the wire) for $15 after rebate starting tomorrow.

Hmmm... I don't see that nowslimmer posted here at all.

Are you saying TPM is nowslimmer?

Another option
You might like for editing is to use a pen-based tablet, like a Wacom, instead of a mouse. Makes a lot of difference, I use one for some of my work.

Been my experience that lockups are usually a product of uncoordinated resource sharing. If you can lock, block or isolate the device(s) that your mouse is currently sharing resources with, the problem should go away. If neither device will permit manual configuration, then you either have to do an OS re-install or else get lucky forcing the resources in question to be split up using indirect methods.

SOP for other Windows operating systems would be to open Control Panel>System>Device Manager>device>Resources and see what the device is using, then compare to other devices. Another way in to the same info is Control Panel>System>device manager>Computer, and double click on "Computer".

Good luck, these issues are a sterling pain.

hmmmmmm, I have the old mouse hooked up now. Went through those steps, or close enough.

Said there are no conflicting devices for the PS/2. However, there is an "interrupt request -- setting 12" If that means anything.

I recall having something hooked up years ago where something like that "interrupt request" was screwing it up. Don't know if it was the same thing, however, I recall having to set it to a different number.

And Violin, LOL, hmmmmmmm... no Nowslimmer to be seen. I think I was looking at the mysterious Minnesotan the packman comments. Hmmm... looked a lot like the style of Nowslimmer.

Windows doesn't notice the conflict until it locks up, by which time it can't warn you. It thinks multiple devices can share a single IRQ or memory address fine if they can share it w/o conflict at boot-up. Sometimes they can. Now you need to find out what else is using IRQ 12, and see if either the mouse or the other device can be persuaded to vacate the premises.

IRQ means "Interrupt ReQuest" which is where a device tells the CPU "hey, I got business with you". When the CPU says "yeah, what do you want" and two devices reply at the same time the CPU usually chokes on the unintelligable reply.

Jeffers in your consistent rambling you can share IRQs. Look at IRQ 9 or 7 and see how many are on that.

You talk too much for a simple solution. The more you talk doesn't make you appear smarter to those who know that you are full of it and probably picked it up out of Leo's Almanac.

CSCO101048xx

That's my cert number from Cisco. I'll give you the ones for my MCSE and SCSA (Sun Unix) when I finish the tests. The classes are behind me but I'm having too much fun doing cross platform integration, directory and filesystem, to settle down and take the all day tests.

Here's some pix of my test network at home:

http://www.in-motion.net/~jefft/etc/mvc-009f.jpg

From L to R, Novell Netware server, Win95 client, Solaris server (top) Linux (Slack) server (lower), Win98 client plus diags, NT server. Up on top is an O-scope that is hooked directly to the LAN so I can see individual packet traffic in realtime and a TV for when I need a break. Not pictured are the pair of Win2K servers and another Sun server in another room, or my routers, switches and firewalls which are behind the camera.

Here's a collage of the datacenter I administer for an airline:

So much for my quals, how bout your's?

Didn't think so.

Windows is capable of administering sharing of IRQs and hardware addys between some devices, but not all. Failures lead to lockups. That succinct enough for ya?

Be gone troll, unless of course, you *enjoy* getting handed yer a$$.

Here's where I hang out when I'm not taking care of my kids or computer networks:

I don't get out as much as I'd like, having only 17 bag nights so far this year, but several of those were over 12k so I'm not griping too much. Gotta love those flight benefits, yes?

So how 'bout you?

What kinda shell are you in that you come here day after day, deliberately bringing these fine people down, being an energy thief rather than contributing something positive, always finding, even seeking out the negative energy instead of finding the good things in life and sharing them with the folks here the same way they are trying to do for you?

Your turn now.

Is your life really all about the negative, or do you just dump that part of otherwise normality here because you aren't mature enough to handle it any better?

Gotta be one or the other, your position on just about everything here is already a matter of public record.

Seriously, dude....what's wrong? What started you onto such an ugly trail and why do you stay on it? There's some really good stuff out there, why can't you find it?

Thanks, Mapleleaf.

We've been car camping all year, and I think we're ready to try a backpacking trip as soon as the temps cool off a bit. It's a blast watching them pick all this up and remembering back to my early days too.

On the other hand we really need to work on the poison ivy identification...
