“If you have not seen the new Outside magazine, I urge you to pick one up. It seems that the magazine will be focusing time and space in their magazine to a problem that no one seems to either know or care about. The lack of available drinking water is starting to pose serious threats to parts of the United States as well as many places on our planet. Many people have been preaching about this threat for years, but as usual, no one listened. About 6 years ago while on a canoe trip in Canada, the outfitter and I talked about these upcoming problems. I (no pun intended) dove into research, read books talked with anyone I could. What I found scared the hell out of me. Living just south, about 10 minutes, of Lake Michigan, you never hear about rivers running dry, people walking 3 miles to obtain thier drinking and cooking water for the day, etc... While working towards my Master's Degree, I had the opportunity to produce a documentary on these very issues. We put together an award winning piece that I am very proud of. What I am trying to get at here is that we all need to wake up and pay attention to these warning signs. Experts have indicated that a major war, not to far off, will probably be fought over water. If you are interested, pick up a copy of a book entitled, "Tapped Out" by Paul Simon. Not the singer but the former Senator from Illinois (who appears in my documentary) This magazine article has rekindled the flame in me regarding water. Try putting the word water in google. You will get thousands of hits. I know I am rambling big time. Just remember, "Every Drop Counts!"” 3:00:22 PM 8/01/03 “As I was writing that long rambling message, I received what I attached below. This is scary! I kid you not. Water or Coke? We all know that water is important but have we ever seen it written down like this before? WATER 1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. 2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger. 3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%. 4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study. 5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue. 6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers. 7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page. 8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer. And now for the properties of COKE: 1. In many states (in the USA) the highway patrol carries two gallons of coke in the truck to remove blood from the highway after a car accident. 2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of coke and it will be gone in two days. 3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous China. 4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola. 5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion. 6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes. 7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for sumptuous brown gravy. 8. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains. 9. It will also clean road haze from your windshield. For Your Info: 1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its pH is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about 4 days. Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase in osteoporosis. 2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck must use the Hazardous material place cards reserved for highly corrosive materials. 3. The distributors of coke have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years! Now the question is: Would you like a coke or a glass of water?” 3:03:58 PM 8/01/03 “Really need to read the Snopes article on this... Snopes The acid in coke is carbonic acid, which comes from the solution of carbon-dioxide in water. In other words, it's common to all carbonated beverages. Much of the rest of the claims are bunk.” 3:11:36 PM 8/01/03 “WK - what's the pH of stomach acid?” 3:13:13 PM 8/01/03 “I once read that in third world countries, parents will raise their children on soda (Coca Cole espcially) because the water is too unfit to drink. I wonder, why doesn't Coke invest in irrigation and filtration systems for these people? Oh that's right - because they are greedy bastards. I read about this before the Coca Cola company came out with "Dasani"....interesting correlation I believe.” 3:39:46 PM 8/01/03 “I wonder, why doesn't Coke invest in irrigation and filtration systems for these people? Oh that's right - because they are greedy bastards. Twinkle Toes 03:39:46 PM 08/01/03 Why should Coke give away it's stockholders' money by building irrigation and filtration systems for third world savages? That's not greed - that's doing its fiduciary duty as a publicly-traded company.” 3:49:23 PM 8/01/03 “Nice job playing the Devil's advocate. I forgot, no one gives a damn about anything.” 3:55:39 PM 8/01/03 “I forgot, no one gives a damn about anything. Twinkle Toes 03:55:39 PM 08/01/03 Not true. Coke's Board of Directors and officers care about making the right business decisions for the stockholders. Just as every Board and all officers of publicly-traded companies should do.” 3:57:48 PM 8/01/03 “What about morals?” 3:59:08 PM 8/01/03 “If you want morals, there are companies you can invest in that purportedly take that kind of stuff into account when making business decisions.” 4:00:43 PM 8/01/03 “A couple years back, I actually tried the old "dissolve a nail in a week" trick with coke (I used a 16-penny nail). After a week, the nail was hardly even rusty, and was certainly still intact enough to be used for its original purpose. After a month, it was just beginning to show appreciable rust. I haven't tried a comparison, but I was lead to believe that the nail actually dissolved SLOWER in Coke than it would have in just regular water (maybe the sugar helps to "passivate" the nail's surface)! I also tried to dissolve a worm in a can of coke (I know, this was cruel - so sue me), and all I got after four days was a dead bloated worm. The "major cause" of osteoporosis is hormonal (reduced estrogen), not dietary. In fact, studies have shown that increased dietary calcium does NOT reduce the prevalence of osteoporosis, so I doubt that "dietary acid" could affect it much, either. On an aside, increased dietary calcium HAS been associated with an increased risk of developing kidney stones, BTW.” 4:44:02 PM 8/01/03 “Honestly, I do not know what the ph level of stomach acid is, nut I can find out.” 4:55:08 PM 8/01/03 “nut=but That sounds kind of sick!” 4:55:51 PM 8/01/03 “pH level is only half the story - one also needs to know molarity to estimate the caustic nature of a solution. For example, lemons typically have pH levels between 1.5 and 2 - an order of magnitude less than that reported for Coke.” 4:58:14 PM 8/01/03 “Forrest- I don't suppose that nail was galvanized? That right there would kill the reaction.” 5:30:10 PM 8/01/03 “Thats cool info WK I printed it out thank you! 8)” 5:41:01 PM 8/01/03 “I tried the coke thing in my toilet once. Let it sit overnight. It didn't do a damn thing.” 10:57:40 AM 8/02/03 “The coke this is more an urban legand. No problem CMB, I will have to get you a copy of my documentary next time I see you. Hey, if anyone wants a copy of it, let me know, I will send it to you.” 9:57:19 AM 8/04/03
