Gosh dang it all to heck!
I'm beyond sick of pop-up ads, I'm disgusted. I can't open a single website without closing one or two or three.
Which pop-up blocker do you suggest and why.

I like Pop-up stopper by panicware. I downloaded it from www.download.com and it can also be downloaded from www.panicware.com I have the free version and I like it because it is free and it lets you know when it is blocking ads. Sometimes there are actually windows I need that are being blocked and in that case I can just hold down the ctrl key to keep it from being blocked.

I also like it because it doesn't create a new toolbar like some pop up stoppers I have used in the past.

I use the same thing but it doesn't stop some pop ups...like the annoying "escape now" add on this site.

I like the Opera browser, PC-cillin & firewalls & don't have too much of a problem with popups. I have to allow for some popups for some of the sites I like (yahoo etc).

If you use Netscape 7.1 browser you can block popups. I'm using it now more than the Microsoft Explorer.

I have the free Pop Up Stopper by panicware and PC-cillin firewall...it's rare for me to get a pop up these days.

Some websites (like some free email sites) won't work properly if you block ads.

How about something to kill animated vertical banner ads?

I use the free panic where and Norton Firewall. Seldom do I see banners or pop-ups.

But it does interfere with some on-line spell-checkers (because they are popups) and an on-line program my wife uses when she works from home.

One thing you might want to consider Currahee. Pop-Ups are oftens the result of data miners and other cookies, embedded in your windows registry..

Even if you STOP the pop-ups by using any of the possible choices, the cookies are still there.. these cause ENDLESS junk mail delivered to your mailbox, and track your every move/interest in regards to your internet activity.

I found the BEST way to get rid of pop-ups was to kill them at their source. For me, it was AD-aware. This not only killed the pop-ups, but killed the junk mail too.

Anything from Gator.com or Cydoor.

I've been using both Spybot and Ad-aware to clean up data miners. Either one alone misses a significant number of nasties.

...which seems like a lot of effort just to get rid of things I would never give permission to get on my computer in the first place.

isn't gator spyware? I always thought you have to agree to something before the load the software on your computer. I had them on my computer for the longest then got swat it from lockdown. The program searched my hard drive and deleted all spy programs and trojans.

Yes, gator is spyware. You could deny all cookies but then you can't do much on the web.

You need to run a clean-up program regularly to keep spyware off your machine.

my kids go to the cheatcc.com site alot, so many darn popups it's rediculas. I know back then the site asked you if you want to download the gator software. My kids did not know better and hit the enter key...well that was it. We had the gator program on our computer.

Thank god it's gone now. I am telling ya, get the SWAT IT program. Really now, trust me on that one.

AdSubtract, Adaware, and SpybotS&D are all good. Plus, I guess you know to turn off the Messenger service.
