Big, beautiful thunderheads are building up to the southeast of Philly at 12:30 p.m., EDT. Should get real interesting this afternoon somewhere between here and the Big Apple.

Yikes, ... now they're almost overhead. The line seems to be moving northeast though. Radar shows a line out to the west.

That is what we got Friday and Sunday night. 2 nights of rain amounted to 7.6 inches of rain, hail, wind gusts up to 80 mph, lightning and flooded streets.

It was so cool!

We had some general craziness last Thursday.

I was taking pictures of, get this, Steam Engine Days queen candidates -- and the low, ominous clouds were swirling directly above me. I figured we were gonna get picked up and go to visit Dunadan.

There was hail in many places. As I headed north, homeward, there was a weird mushroom-shaped cloud by the setting sun in the west. OK, who dropped THE BOMB and why was it not publicized???

All I know is that by the middle to end of August, the skies better clear up a little so I can take the telescope up to the roof and do some skywatching. Mars is going to be so visible...

My driveway (because of the way it have settled) collects water when it rains. Unfortunatly if it raing too much, the collection of water grows until it runs into the house. There it slowly seeps down into my basement. I think I fixed it yesterday, but that was after 5 inches fell.

Artex, the weather forecast in Tampa is the same through the hot months. Hazy, hot humid with a high of 95. Winds barely 5 mph. Rain from 3:00 to 3:15 PM every day. After which, steam will rise from the streets. At the radio stations, we used the same piece of paper (with the forecast on it) practically every day...

Hey, I have a daughter in western Maryland on Outward Bound. Did they get this storm?

There are thundershowers popping up all over the east today Limpy. Looks like there's a line out in western Maryland and West Virginia too. The rain has come, heavy for a minute or two, but steady. Not a lot of electrical activity though. The line out west does not look as severe on the radar screen, for whatever that is worth.

The same pattern will probably be with us for the next week to ten days.

My daughter is at Girl Scout camp all this week in NEPA. Looks like she’ll be dodging showers and thunderstorms all week.

There was a group of girl scouts camped at Green Lane Park. They had been out for three weeks horseback riding, camping, and taking care of the horses. It was neat to watch the girls haul water, two to the tub, and fuss over the horses.

Seemed like a neat program for a lucky group of girls.

Of course, I kept thinking that if Robert E. Lee had had those 17 horses at Gettysburg, the Civil War might have turned out differently.

Geobeet, that is what my daughter wants to do. Horsecraziness has arrived at my house. It is a girl thing.

What was neat about this program was that the leader had them lined up and working to take care of the horses ... first. Just like the old horse cavalry.

But what an opportunity for the kids!

Yeah, I was wondering how it would look if it was boys doing the same thing. Girls do seem to get into caring for horses and riding moreso than boys.

Having spent summers on the farm, I quickly decided that taking care of horses was a high price to pay for a ride every now and again.

Weather Service says:
SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MOUNT HOLLY NJ
1235 PM EDT MON AUG 4 2003

ANOTHER ROUND OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS

THE SAME MOIST AND UNSTABLE AIRMASS THAT WAS OVER THE AREA YESTERDAY
IS STILL IN PLACE TODAY...AND WILL REMAIN FOR SEVERAL MORE DAYS.
THUS WITH DAYTIME HEATING...SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ARE AGAIN
FORMING THIS AFTERNOON OVER MANY INLAND LOCATIONS. THE ONLY PLACE
THAT MAY AVOID THE RAIN IS THE IMMEDIATE COASTAL AREA.

MANY OF THESE THUNDERSTORMS WILL PRODUCE HEAVY DOWNPOURS THAT MAY
CAUSE LOCALIZED FLOODING IN AREAS OF POOR DRAINAGE...OR PONDING OF
WATER ON ROADWAYS. THE HEAVY DOWNPOURS WILL ALSO REDUCE VISIBILITIES
OVER A SHORT DISTANCE. IF TRAVELING...BE ALERT FOR CHANGING WEATHER
CONDITIONS. REMEMBER...IF FLOODING DOES OCCUR...DO NOT DRIVE OR WALK
THROUGH FLOODED AREAS SINCE THE WATER MAY BE DEEPER THAN YOU THINK.

A FEW THUNDERSTORMS COULD ALSO PRODUCE DAMAGING WINDS...ALTHOUGH
HEAVY RAIN WILL BE MUCH MORE COMMON. ALSO...ANY THUNDERSTORMS IS
CAPABLE OF PRODUCING DANGEROUS CLOUD TO GROUND LIGHTNING. IF A
THUNDERSTORMS APPROACHES...SEEK SHELTER INDOORS.

Not much to it here. But the conditions remain, with many clouds banked up around the area and high humidity.

We had storms across Kentucky.
The Jim Beam distillery in Bardstown has a warehouse on fire right now, they think it was started by lightning.

Last time a distillery burned in Kentucky, a bunch of whiskey got into the creek and killed all kinds of fish. It was back in 2000 if I recall, an Ancient Age distillery.

Its nice with the rain and thunder and lightning but not as cool as when I watched with horror as a small funnel cloud formed near our house in Miami. Of course, that turned out to be be flat out scary - until it just as quickly unformed...

Tornados scare the crap out of me.

should have brought your kayak to work - you could have paddled home!

of course, the nasty thing about the city and alot of rain is that they dump the sewage into the rivers in weather like this - pretty nasty...

My partner and I got into a discussion a few days ago in the Trinity Alps...we discussed doing a bivy on a ridge with the kids after a rather grueling day of hiking in 105 temps...we decided to hike the 1/2 mile to a camp we use instead of using the ridge....about 20 min after setting up camp the ridge got nailed with a bolt, the thunder about knocked us over. Scared the hell out of the kids.

WAY COOL!
