“I've made an official "Isle Royale Pile". I'm making lists. I'm going to weigh out all our shared gear so we can divy it up fairly. I have food for the trip on my grocery list. I'm thinking constantly about what I'll take along for luxury items. Do I really need a book? Should I get brand new batteries for my headlamp so I don't have to worry about taking a spare set? (yes, I think so) WHAT'S THE WEATHER GOING TO DO UP THERE?
I love this part of a big trip.”
I'm w/ ya. I started my IR Pile a week ago, or so. Hope no one wants to sit on my couch for the next couple weeks. lol. I have only two things left on my "to buy" list: a prescription refill and the bread products for lunch. I'm ready!
P.S. - Yes, I did that... take out the old (but not dead) batteries and replaced them w/ brand new ones.
P.S.S. Book is on my list for sure. I weighed every paperback I own and am bringing only the smallest, lightest one. So what if it's The Mouse and Motorcycle. I've only read it a few times...
Kidding! There's a few diff books I wanna read. Haven't decided which one I'll bring yet. I'm deciding between The Last American Man, Catcher in the Rye and one of a couple Vonnegut books.
I had the most bizarre dream last night. I dreamt that CMB was w/ us, that there was a live band on the ferry, that I forgot my clothes, my tent stakes, and a container in which to carry water, and that everyone picked a "buddy" to hike w/ and ya'll stuck me w/ CMB. I've since woken up... but I still haven't forgiven ya'll! lol”
“Some dream! Yikes.”
“Here is what I have packed so far.......
Autographed Picture of Crazy Mike
1 Brick of Columbian Hasheesh
Cherry Chapstick (Birch's Favorite!)
Book "I'm not Fat, I'm Special" by Suze Orman
Scooby Doo Inflatable Pillow
I'll pack some of the less important stuff when we get closer.”
“Would you share the chapstick and some of the brick please? I'll trade you some of my gorp for it.”
“BB, it sounds like you have thought of everything so far. keep in mind that this is a wilderness area so electric power is unavailable. I think home depot still has those small 3KW generators that are on wheels. I bet you could pull one of those. BTW dont overpack cause you are still carrying my stuff...see ya there toots!”
“Let's get something straight here.
You are MY prison beeyyyatch.
“Still need cigars and liteline. I'm sewing a new tarp for the trip, just received the material yesterday.
Good thinking on the blow-dryer. Us single guys think alike.;) .....What's a Spider Ring?”
“You never got a spider ring in your halloween bag?! You know those black plastic spider rings....?
BB you like Jamison's?”
“Joy - You trying to get him drunk?”
“Hey Joy - You mentioned that we need to pack our fuel close to the top since they pack that separately. That's not all fuel, is it? Is it safe to assume that isn't the case w/ Esbit tabs? It seems they would mainly be concerned w/ cannister fuel and such.”
“Sass - when you say "our shared gear" do you mean you and Joe, or all of us?”
“Tarabull, I think we should assume it's all flamable fuel, not just liquid. It may not be but better to have it on top of your pack than have to dig it out when loading up. They put it in a seperate location on the boat.
Craig, I meant Joe's and my shared gear.”
I just packed all my stuff including water for a cursory weight. 42.5 lbs. I set a mandatory max of 40lbs so I started shaving weight. I dropped a total of 4lbs, mainly in extra food and my scotch :( I think I may have to unpack it all and look again. I would really like to be at 35lbs to start.
9 day till we leave!”
“birch - no problem. Isn't BB carrying your food? That'll put you at about 25lbs, easy! Good for you!!”
“lol, he put the scotch back in, took out some extra food, (some of the heavier stuff) and lost some water weight and is happy. He was running around here last night like a man on a mission, lmao. Even woke me up to let me know he'd gotten the weight down to something more "reasonable". =)”
“I was kinda surprised to find that our purifier, fuel, stove, pot (w/scrubby and soap), shelter, coffee press, and camera and journal only add up to around eight pounds.”
“Everyone have their power back?????
I'm coming in at right about #10 for food, not including alcohol and cigars. And I'm about #30 total with water.:) That's with 1 and a half fifths and #6 of water.
I have a cool spreadsheet of my food showing calories per day and percentages of fat, carbs, and protein. That's the first time I've done that. It's kind of nice to know, I guess.:)
7 MORE DAYS!!!!!!!!!!”
“Well, my hangover is gone. And I am now officially packed. I went through all my crap again and did some deleting and added in my scotch and some other stuff and came to a very nice 36.5lbs with all food and 2qts water. That is by far a personal record!
6 more days and we are gone!”
“I plan to have my pack officially packed and weighed tomorrow. I'll post the details. Sounds like we'll have similar weight, birch.
Am still wavering between the Bat Ray and the siltarp. Robin was over today and we had some ideas on how I could get more "privacy" out of the siltarp. We'll see if I can get creative in the next few days...”
“I'm at 35 pounds. Right where I hoped I'd be. Last time I went there for an 8 day trip it was 55lbs. Big improvement.”
“Ok, did a trial pack-up. Threw 10 days' food, necessary clothes and gear into my bpack and hoofed it to my neighbor's house to use her scale (I don't own one).
36 lbs. I must be missing something. For just whipping stuff together that is too good to be true.”
“I just tossed in some lt wt long undies, a candle and a bag of candy so I'm prolly up to 36 now.”
“I got most everything packed this weekend. My clothes aren't packed, I'm waiting for some goodies from my friend in the brown truck. Won't be bringing much extra clothes .
Still haven't decided on what shelter to bring, either. Solo tent, or tarp and/or bivy sack.
I'm thinking with it being so warm still the bugs might not have been killed off yet.
Worst case = 34 lbs, and that's 14 lbs of food.”
Yam - your pack is 36 lbs because all your clothes are extra small.”
“Oh My Goodies!!! Food takes up a lot of space! I like yam's idea. She told to me that she'd just eat pizza 24-7 from now til we get on the ferry and just live off her body fat for 9 days.
I finally finished my test-pack. I don't have everything I need (flat bread/tortillas/liquor). Once that stuff is in and depending on which shelter I end up w/, I'll be somewhere around 34-47lbs.”
“K. I just un-packed it all. Gotta make sure I have more than enough but not too much food.
Lunch on Saturday? On the trail? Or do they serve food on the ferry?
Lunch on the last day? Didn't you guys say there was a restaurant on the island? Do you anticipate eating lunch there?
“Tara, I'm planning on bringing lunch for the 2 days you mentioned. I figured 8 brkfsts, lunches, and dinners.”
“Sometimes, but not always, they have sandwiches on the ferry. It depends on weather.
If the snackbar's open I'll be eatting cheeseburgers and fries on the last day, but I have a spare powerbar and snacks if they're not. The store will definately be open and we could always eat junk food (pringles and ice cream anyone?)”
“I'm bringing 8 dinners, 8 b'fasts, and 7 lunches but am planning on carrying a big ole sub sandwich to eat on the dock while I listen to the rangers' speach.
When I was at the store (early in year) all they had was junk food, but I did get a quart of milk for like $8. The restaurant was always closed.”
“I think it opens only in the summer months, June-August.
Stuff is definately very expensive there because of the National Parks tax, atop of having to ship everything there.”
