When I walk, both of my ankles snap a pop. There is no pain or discomfort at all, but the sounds are pretty noticeable.

Anyone know what might cause this? Will it cause me trouble down the road. Am I going to wear something out?

I'm curious to know the answer. I have the same thing happen to me in my right shoulder blade when I'm kayaking.

Are you eating rice krispies while you hike?

My ankles have done that my whole life. I don't know. I once had neighbor who called me "reindeer foot" (their ankles click) because of this. Nice thing to tell a little kid.

John, seriously, have you ever broke a bone in you foot or leg near the popping?

I broke my big toe when I was a kid and when I bend it, it pops.

It's the tendons/ligaments in the area running over each other and/or bones....

I've heard the same thing as Twinks. My ankles pop from time to time, my Fathers did real bad. Mine don't everyday and it seems that since I've been hiking it happens less. I have always had wierd ankles. I've sprang them each over 5 tmes while growing up and sometimes on the trail, I'll turn them so the outside of my foot hits the ground, with no pain.

No broken bones. Tendons sounds more reasonable. I have thin bony ankles. Should I be worried?

If your tendons and ligaments are strong, you should be fine.

I had a knee that popped when I played softball. I'd crouch down behind the plate and the knee would audibly pop. Sometimes I'd time my crouch to disrupt the batter's concentration.

-*POP*-

"What the f*** was that?"

"STRIKE ONE!"

Nope. Not unless it's accompanied by pain.

my right ankle has popped/clicked for as long as i can remember. no pain at all, BUT if i'm going to sprain an ankle you can pretty much bet it will be the right one. can't recall ever spraining the left. i've always wondered if this was a coincidence or somehow related.

I've got a tendon that I can move at will over my anklebone, making a loud popping sound.

It freaks my kids out when I do it.

hey laqtis, i've noticed that i can now do the same thing with my right ankle. i've rolled it a couple of times this year already, serious rolls that really should have resulted in a bad sprain, but if i get up right away and walk on it all it does is swell up and get mildly tender. i've been able to continue the trips like it had never happened. weird.

Bit, I can do the same thing and actually its a bad happen sometimes, like snapping your fingers.

I feel i little more assured that it's not a problem.

Geo my knees pop too when I squat then stand up.

You may have to start calling me Rice Krispie!

No ankle popping here, just right-knee crunching sounds. Oh wait, I also have the ability to experience unbelievable pain if I sit cross legged and have the tendon on my left leg 'pop out'..ah, the joys of growing old.

It's a sign of an insufficient amount of backpacking. My ankle use to pop all the time. Now that I backpack more it doesn't.

When I was playing basketball all the time (many years ago), my ankles would pop with just about every step. No pain or discomfort, just a lot of noise. I haven't had any problems with my ankles other than mild sprains over the last decade or so. I wouldn't worry about it much.

My ankles, knees and hips pop. I broke my big toe when I was a kid also WoundedKnee! blasted log roll. My dad thought I was just being a baby and took me to Mcd's for a sundae instead of the doctor. I have had pain in my knee from it popping but they get sore with any kind of high impact exercise ~ its in my genes I believe

Yeah, if you put your pants on right, your knee should be in your jeans :-)
