Being new I read a few posts on webshots. I am kinda new to this, I downloaded webshots program, pretty neat, but do I understand correctly you have to pay to be able to download more than 5 pics a day?

That's not true for me, but I've had my free account for more than a year. I upload mine one at a time.

Not uploading pics, downloading to the program that changes your wallpapers. Downloading them off webshots.

KR, webshots should let you download 10 albums of up to 24 pics for free. I don't remember being restricted on the daily thing...

Oh, duh. Yes, I think you have to pay to get more than just a few downloads a day.

I think we are talking different things. Using the wallpaper program, going to the Daily Photo area, not the user community, on the free account I can only download 5 pics, then it says to get unlimited I have to pay.

I can't get the webshots program downloaded.

I can get to the albums if I dial up and I can get to the community section, but everytime I try to access www.webshots.com to download to manage desktop and screensaver, I get a blank screen with a popup box that states "You have caught the webshot virus" and my computer freezes.

I know my Norton is updated and I am no virus is coming through, but I cannot download this.

I had it on Windows 98, but when they installed XP, I couldn't get the program.

Any ideas?

Geez aero, if you ever need a job you can come work for our IT department. That is the kind of advice I get from them.

Next!

I checked the Symantec site and found no entry for a "webshots virus". Sorry, I've no clue on what the problem might be. Have you emailed Webshots yet to see if they've heard of it?

bp, I get the same message on every page on webshots other than the community files with pics.

I am going to delete files and cookies and try again.

I have a lot of problems with linking and people being able to view linked pics. My albums are public but it still pukes on me.

Worthless!

That's a good start. If you still get it, I'd contact Webshots and ask them what's up. It may be their sad idea of a joke or something.

Nigal, Webshots blocks that on purpose. That's why you have problems with it. However, if the pic is already in your cache, it will appear to work sometimes.

Wonder whether FiddleBoy has been fooling around with Webshots.

still nothing.

Anyone have an email address for webshots?

I can't even get into their help page.

They don't list an email address, they have a form that you use to send your question to them.

Have you talked to the IT people on your end? It's possible this is some sort of practical joke they are playing on you.

No, bp. We can't get out to webshots through the server.

I have to use dial up to get there. I can see the trip pictures fine. But I try to go to any other area of WebShots I get a page that states "You have caught the Webshots Virus" on top and the same message in a pop up window.

It freezes IE until I hit the "ok" button in the pop up window 15 times (I counted them). Then the window goes away but the page remains the same.

I have deleted cookies, cleaned out files and looked through everything.

I saved my photo collection when I had it installed on Win 98, but when they installed XP on my laptop, I could never get the webshots program to load.

I can't find any info at all about a "Webshots virus" using Dogpile or Google. There's no info on it at Symantec or Snopes.

Do you have Netscape on your PC? You might want to see if switching to another browser fixes the problem.

Personally, I think someone is playing some sort of elaborate trick on you.

Webshots' IP is 128.242.104.137. try this link and see if you can see the Webshots home page that way. If so, then I think someone's installed something on your computer.

bp, when I used your link, I got to what looked to be a promising page.

I clicked the button in the middle of the page to "get started" and the same thing happened again.

This is driving me crazy.

It looks like something is intercepting web traffic for the "www.webshots.com" domain. This is why you can still get to the picture pages, because they are on the "community.webshots.com" domain. I have to believe that this is something on your computer.

Who did the upgrade to XP for you?

Your dialup account isn't AOL, is it? They are apparently in some sort of spat with webshots right now.
bloodpusher

No, I dial out on AT&T Global.

Our IT installed XP. Our firewall on the server blocks Webshots and while I am online, Norton updates from the server (I can manually update when in the field).

You might ask one of your IT guys to look your computer over very carefully.

I would ask someone other than the guy who upgraded it for you.

Just out of curiosity, what do you see when you attempt to get to webshots through your corporate firewall? Does it just 404, or do they have a special page (like ours does for blocked content) saying that you can't go there?

404
