I'm seriously thinking of doing this...
...trip....but I'm inclined to want to get there a day earlier...possibly leave on Thursday after work like around 4ish.....from my neck of the woods...it's about 484 miles mostly on Hwy 81 south from PA....Pennsy and/or Fritz are you guys in or out? Let me know...maybe we could carpool....also let me know if you might be interested in leaving a day earlier......

kidding...I hope all comes to play out on this trip and it is a good time, and that I get to make it...its a loooong drive, for sure...527 miles...yikes!!!

If the weather is foul, I'll bail...not that I'm afraid of the rain...I love the rain, but, I'm not gonna drive 1000 miles to hike in the rain. But, if I get there and it starts to rain, then thats ok.

I am in Nashville, TN. This sounds like a pretty cool hike. I am new to the site. Is there anyone passing through Nashville and has room for another?

Hey Loop - I am definately in for the trip but I don't know when I'll be leaving. Thursday afternoon is doubtful. At this point I'm thinking leaving very early Friday (3-4 AM) or late Thursday night and nap at a rest stop. I'll know more as the date gets closer.

timberline
I heard that Mt. Rogers is close to the timberline. Is that true? What is it like at the summit? I can't find any good photos. What is the elevation gain and how steep is the trail? Thanks Rob

It's close to/above the timberline. I usually use oxygen for this trip, but that's only because I'm not Russian.

Nashvillehiker...I Will have the Dog Faced Boy...aka...Khatru with me. So, If your allergic...I can duct tape ya to the roof rack.

This will be a long drive for me...I'm thinking that I'll be able to cut out from work @2:30. 4 hours to Nashville...makes it 6:30.

Anyone know the time distance from Nashville...and factor in the time zone change...dang easterners.

Nashville to Mt. Rogers
I don't know about Nashville to Mt Rogers, but Nashville to Marion, VA is roughly 5 hours. That would be awesome to ride along with you. I'm not allergic to roof racks, duct tape or dogs.

I will spend more time in the car, than on the trail...hmmmmmmm....SL...you better be goin on this trip dude...this ones for you!!!! and you better be packin some Utz pretzles and a box or 2 of tasty cakes, heck, for that kind of driven...better make that 3 barrels and 3 boxes...and some soft ones too, for the trail. Pennsy...
....just keep me posted....originally I was thinking of leaving after work between 430 - 6...just so I could get on the road but if you're leaving slightly later on Thursday night...that wouldn't be a problem with me...what about coming back...are you planning to be back home by late Sunday night? Also, i'd like to swing by the ranger headquarters in Marion on Friday by 430pm if possible...that's my only deadline....need to stamp my passport book...

Yo Stikkie...Utz Pretzels, TastyKakes, and some soft pretzels coming your way...while i'm at it anyone else have an order they would like to place? Maybe a cheese steak?

hey Loop...
I'm planning on leaving for home Sunday. I have to be at work on Monday. I'm not sure I want to get that late a start on the trail Friday afternoon. I'd like to get there sometime in the morning to get a good hike in before hitting the shelter.

I haven't ruled out taking off thursday to get an extra day in. I'll just have to see how the next few weeks play out.

hey om, that is the nicest picture i have seen in a while (mmooohhhaaaa).

saturday night will be at rhododendrun gap area (much more space for a large group) unless the weather drives us to the shelter again. the gap is not far from the thomas knob shelter. both have awesome vistas. i don't know what time we will be there, but we will be there friday. we may not get to the trail head till 8 or so. it is 1.5 miles up to the old orchard shelter. it is an easy uphill hike that is no problem after dark. there are no cliffs and it is white blazed.

om's pictures are better than mine but here are a couple of albums of mount rogers

trail map of the area. the old orchard shelter is in the upper right quadrant. the only part of the itenerary that isn't on this is a small portion of the AT as you get down toward massie gap in greyson highlands state park. that would be on the bottom section of the map.

jgiles...
I will be trying for a comp day on friday...and that would allow for a thurs evening departure, with a fri am arrival at the TH. This is a long shot and I am not overly hopeful that this will come to fruition (big word). More than likely the reality will be a early Friday afternoon departure (@2 or so) with a arrival at the TH late, like 1am. or stop somewhere and sleep then arrive at the TH early sat morn.

Nashville hiker has not responded to me regarding picking him up in Nashville. My car will have room for 1. So, first up, first served.

Sunday, I;d like to be back at the car, no later than 2:30 for the long drive home.

Sounds like fun!
