This Study Is Flawed...View MessagesViewing posts 1 to 23 of 23 messages posted.
I think they aremissing the point here... “...I mean, I am trying to see the big picture. The study says that cell phones don't rank high on the list of distractions that encumber people while driving. They are basing it on the fact that more people fumble with the radio, lean and reach in the car, eat and drink, and talk with other passengers. Yet the article and the study seem to downplay the dangers of cell phone usage while driving. This is where I think they are missing the boat. It may be true that more people fumble with the radio than talk on the phone at any given time statistically). However, when comparing those two things, they do not address the nature of the acts. Each act of diversion carries with it an involvment factor. Isn't it true that people get emotionally sucked into heated conversations on the phone at times? Is the same true for listening to the radio (Unless you are yelling at Limbaugh or something like that)? That makes the level of distraction different between the two acts. So, although there might not be as many people talking as playing with a radio at any given time, I don't want to be driving anywhere near the dude that is yelling at his girlfriend and not watching the road. I applauded NY State for passing its 'hands free' cell phone law last year. However, now that I see it to be the most unenforced law on the books, I am angered and appalled by the lack of care in carrying it out. Distractions Any thoughts, folks?” 8:02:55 AM 8/07/03 “These folks obviously did not study Germantown (affluent Memphis suburb) housewives who careen around I-240 in the biggest SUV known to mankind with a cell phone pasted to their ear.” 8:16:01 AM 8/07/03 “Case in point, Chili...” 8:16:52 AM 8/07/03 “And unfortunately, I see that same scenario all over the place. I don't know about you, but that makes me a hell of a lot more nervous than someone changing stations or eating a sandwich.” 8:18:19 AM 8/07/03 “No kidding.” 8:20:16 AM 8/07/03 “I now use a headset and have noticed a great difference while driving.” 8:20:45 AM 8/07/03 “....unless the sandwich is talking back! Punching the kids in the back seat would be a great distraction too.” 8:21:52 AM 8/07/03 “Another study (don't have the cite) found that using a phone while while driving increases the likelihood of an "accident" by 30%. Having seen people around Chicago with a phone stuck in their ear, I think that must be LOW. BTW We have a cell phone, but don't use it while driving.” 8:26:33 AM 8/07/03 “"Punching the kids in the back seat would be a great distraction too." I saw a bumper sticker once that said, "Hug 'em at home and beat 'em in the car!".” 8:29:48 AM 8/07/03 “I also use an earpiece all the time. I feel like Maple and I are the exeptions to the rule on the streets here. And I do belive that study, Stump. I believe the likelihood of an accident is huge with cell usage... lmao @ Tom T though...” 8:32:25 AM 8/07/03 “Well beard dude, perhaps you will feel a small measure of vindication knowing that some states have outlawed the use of cell phones while operating a motor vehicle and more states are leaning that direction. Not soon enough, I say...” 8:38:49 AM 8/07/03 “That's great, FG. I think it's necessary. I just hope they don't do what my state did and make the measure worthless by not enforcing it..” 8:41:06 AM 8/07/03 “handsfree is where it's at.....now if i could only figure out how to masterbate that way......” 9:12:35 AM 8/07/03 “This makes me think of the show I was watching about the autobahn in Germany and how something like that could never work in this country. In the show they stated that when German car manufacturers started selling cars in the U.S. they couldn’t understand why Americans needed cup holders in their cars.” 9:20:15 AM 8/07/03 “Why do I suddenly develop the suspicion that stradewd is more dangerous on the road than the women yakking on the cell phone?” 9:20:24 AM 8/07/03 “Mind over matter, dewd! Levitation?” 9:21:17 AM 8/07/03 Chili “Just think about all those special sauces when you eat at Arby's next time.” 9:24:08 AM 8/07/03 “Thanks, arky, in just 14 words, you moved Arby's to the permanent ban list.” 9:25:58 AM 8/07/03 “Too much mojo-spices in that kinda food. We used to stop at Arby's in Petersberg, WVa after hikes but that stuff would put me to sleep at the wheel.” 9:33:07 AM 8/07/03 “lmao @ Chili” 9:39:14 AM 8/07/03 “This is so overblown and obviously slanted, I got so mad when I read this report on my laptop, I ran a stoplight.” 9:42:22 AM 8/07/03 “"handsfree is where it's at.....now if i could only figure out how to masterbate that way......" stratdewd 09:12:35 AM 08/07/03 New meaning to "Palm Pilot"” 9:48:59 AM 8/07/03 “I don't see the need for another law, when most states have distracted driving or careless driving laws already on the books. Also, you have truck drivers, police officers, paramedics, tons of others talking on the radio, and they seem to do alright.” 10:52:56 AM 8/07/03
