Superior Hiking trail trip Sept. 20 -22

“Will be hiking the SHT Sept 20-22. I'm for sure and CrazyMike signed on as a maybe :) More people are welcome. Would be great to start meeting everyone from the site!”

“I hiked part of this section last year. The campsite at Bear Lake (3.4 miles east of Penn Blvd in Silver Bay) is spectacular, but the trout were not biting that night. Tettegouche State Park has got some great vistas, but in the summer the campsites fill up 100% all the time (9.7 miles east of Silver Bay). If you elect to reserve a campsite in the campgrounds at Tettegouche State Park, try for walk in sites 24 or 25 since these are the closest to the trail, but remember that you will still have to walk about a mile further to pick up your campsite permit. The campgrounds have showers and the park strictly enforces the "two tents" per site rule. Camping on the trail can be more convenient.

What time are you meeting people at the trailhead Saturday? Are you going to do your own shuttle or take the shuttle bus?

I'll be at my cabin in far northwest Wisconsin about three hours from the Superior Hiking Trail in September and you can put me down as a "probably".”

My plan right now is to try and leave from Lanse Thursday night and drive to Minnesota....Could drive to Simer's in Ely and leave bright and early Friday monring?? What do you guys think? I'm flexible on this one as I would like to have as many people as possible make it.... I've hiked this section in the past and think it's beautiful!!”

We'll firm up the plans as we approach the trip. Looks like I might not be able to get Friday off - so I would have to jet to Minnesota Friday night and we could head to the trail bright and early Saturday.”

“Hey Zwa... Just curious, but how far of a drive is it from Marquette to SHT? Marquette is high on my list of places to move in the next few years. I love it there!

“I'd say you would be looking @ about 5 and a half hours to the southern start of the trail.... The ride goes by pretty quickly.

Marquette is a pretty cool. I would prefer to be back in Minneapolis - but this will be good for now. Trying to make a slow move toward the west. I set myself back a bit by coming back here last year :) Went east from Minnesota when I should be going west.... But I had to come back home to spend time with a grandfather before he passed away.”

Just a reminder that we're gonna be rockin' and rollin'up on the SHT in September. If you're interested check it out on the trips page. We currently have 3 "yes" and 4 "maybe".

If you're a maybe, please let me know as soon as possible if this trip will work out for you. I plan on getting us some sites at Tettegouche State Park if anyone desires them.

I will be leaving Michigan Friday night and heading to Simer's in Ely, Minnesota. We should arrive @ the trailhead (Lake County Rd. 6) around 8am on Saturday the 20th. I don't plan on sprinting this trip (sporting a bum-knee). Hiking from Lake County Rd. 6 to Tettegouche the first day. And then from Tettegouche to Bear Lake the second day. Monday morning we'll roll into Silver Bay and head back to our vehicles :)

“How far is the Monday hike? Anticipated time out?”

“Monday will be 3.5 miles to Siver Bay and then however long it takes to get back to our cars. I'm suggesting if possible that we set it up so we can stage one vehicle in Silver Bay and take one up to the trailhead so we can just run people to their car Monday.... Beats waiting around for the shuttle. I hitch-hiked last year but that kinda stunk.... Was hoping to get picked up by a little honey and ended up with a fat man and his dog instead.

“lol, last time i did the same section solo i hitchhiked back to my car, i didn't get no hunny either, i was stuck with some nice older lady. She was way too trusting to be picking people up off the street though, she had to make a quick stop at the store in finland... left me in the car, with the keys in the ignition, running? ok, lol, looks like a free car, she returned with a bottle of orange juice for me? yeah, she was nice :)”
