Last Tuesday I got home from work really early..so I grabbed my day pack and headed up to Mineral King
(Sequoia National Park, CA)for the rest of the afternoon. It was 3:00 when I finaly hit the trail. The weather was gorgeous...no mozzies to speak of...all was well!

I wanted to check out the old White Chief Mine(1873). It's 3.5 miles to the mine and I still had lots of daylight so off I went...

Beautiful pictures, as usual...

Was that a long lens you used on "Mom hasn't noticed me yet..." or did you actually get that close without her taking notice? Lots of great wildlife shots! Thanks for sharing.

Excellant pictures WW. Right in my backyard too. The lupine was one of the finest I have seen for that plant. Great eye!

Treebait...Mozzies= Mosquitoes

Steve... my digital has a 3x zoom not what I would call a long lens, I was very close :)I saw 17 deer (4 fawns) on this little day hike and 3 on the drive home.
I've never seen that many deer in one afternoon before...hmmm I must have been in a National Park LOL!

Caddis...your back yard? where are you at? I'm in Porterville.

Good job WW. Your photos are getting better and better. Did you any with your new Nikon SLR?

Having gone through your Sierrapalooza journal again, those are some pretty good photos there. That's one you'll want to look back on as a reference point.

can anyone explain this photo...I sure can't. This was near the back of the mine...
Strange Mine Photo

Too weird!

Tekdude...I carried both cameras around my neck and took many of the same photos with both...so I could compare a little. They came out pretty much the same. The journal has only digital images.

I picked up a 28-200 lens for the Nikon...it should be here soon!
Can't wait!!!

Were you in total darkness when you took the shot with a flash?

I wonder if that was an artifact of your headlamp, or an external light source.

My headlamp was on...but it was still pretty hard to see anything.

It kinda looks like smoke...but I wasn't smoking ;)

Maybe not followed but I suspect he was being . . . watched. You never know what lives in those old mines. We are not alone, ya know.

I'm reading the history of the area up there; I picked up a book at the store in Silver City. It gives more of an explanation about the mining efforts and problems, and details some of the local characters. These local histories are interesting, and an enjoyable read if you find well written ones. Not all are well-written.

LOL! Phil
I look up at that peak everytime I'm there...can't believe we came over that pass!

Shawn...what's the title/author?

Guess where I went today??? :)

I went up to Farewell Gap (10,587') today just to peek over at the other side!
Had a PB&J sandwich at the top and came back down. It was a 13.4 mile dayhike with a gain and loss of 2,787'. I spooked a small blonde bear on the way back down it was eating berries just of the trail. Had a great day!
