HOLY CRAP......................I'M GOING BACKWARDSView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 13 of 13 messages posted.
We're All Devo “All this slowly trying to lighten my packweight for the past years, and just when I have it around 20# for a 2-3day trip, along comes my trip to the Daks and "BAM" I'm back to a 35# pack...and that's without water. I gotta admit I think I have too much food, probably around 3-4# of food per day, plus I'm bringing my bombproof 7.5# SD Omega tent, AND I'm carrying all Buddur's dogfood and treats. Wow, now that I put it that way, I can understand why I got so much weight. Oh well, so much for trying to go as light as possible...sometimes you just have to do what you gotta do.” 8:58:35 PM 8/11/03 “For a 42 mile trip this last weekend I was at 20.5. 8)” 8:59:27 PM 8/11/03 “buddur, make that dang dog carry his own food! mike, that's awesome!” 9:03:56 PM 8/11/03 “Thank you! 8)” 9:05:30 PM 8/11/03 “Mike, what type of equipment are ya bombin' with @ 20.5? That's an awesome weight...” 9:06:34 PM 8/11/03 “OR Biviy 50 deg sleeping bag Tin can stove Sweetwater flter Lowa apine backpack 2 qt water 8)” 9:10:45 PM 8/11/03 It'sAGoodThingI'llBeDaypackingFromABasecamp “The dog usually does carry his own food...just not in the Summer's heat. If it were Fall, Winter or Spring he'd be lugging his own crap, but his coat I'm sure is hot enough without the saddlebag pack on him. Aren't I considerate? (girls take note)” 9:11:16 PM 8/11/03 “buchshot's the other way around...he can't take the cold... mike, how much tuna did you take?” 9:16:20 PM 8/11/03 “Buddur... You love that dog ...it's plain to see. He's very fortunate to own you. For me, pack weight is a simple matter of what's necessary to hike my own hike. I've never been under 30 lbs. for a three or four nighter. On the other hand, I've been as high as 60 lbs. in the earlier years, so these days, I'm okay with the 40 lbs. I usually carry for a multi-day trip.” 9:54:15 PM 8/11/03 Hey... “Bomber tent, carrying the dogs food and your own good food....sounds like a fair trade off. Some times the extra weight is worth it. Consider it training.......” 10:05:00 PM 8/11/03 “Buddur, you have come full circle...maybe in reverse? sounded good.” 5:05:50 AM 8/12/03 “When I did 6 days in the White Mountains my pack started at 35 pounds. Looking back I could have easily shed about 8 - 10 pounds of that. Maybe you need to go back through your stuff and start weeding out a few things. I can do a 4 day trip with about 23 pounds. That's with food & water. Good Luck!” 5:58:17 AM 8/12/03 “Now that I finally have a 4ish pound tent I have to go to a bigger size to fit me and the dog in when she hit’s the trail. I spent a lot of time looking at the lightest three man tent for the least money and I came back around to what I already have…the Clip Flashlight (only in 3 man). It’s just over $200, is huge (6’x8’) and is right at 5 pounds. There are just so many aspects of hiking with a dog that I never thought about. It is fun to figure it all out. Do you get Budder a summer cut? I read that it takes nearly 18 months for a long haired dog to grow it’s coat back so I’m not sure if I’ll want to get Honey a summer cut or not.” 8:07:48 AM 8/12/03
